Hawkes Bay Native takes MAINZ Scholarship
Jesse Kearse, guitarist for Smokefree Rockquest band 'Peaches 'n' Spleen', has been awarded the "MAINZ Musicianship
Award" during the national finals on October 20th.
The award entails a scholarship to the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand (MAINZ) worth $4425 as part of the
institute's sponsorship with the Rockquest and is awarded to one Regional Award winner on the basis of a written essay
on their music career and educational goals.
Jesse was judged the best musician at the Hawkes Bay final of the rockquest so that he could then compete for the MAINZ
award nationally.
By winning this award, Kearse will be entitled to full tuition fees for a year at MAINZ in a Certificate Programme of
his choice - Contemporary Music Performance, Live Sound and Event Production, Audio Engineering and Music Production.
The scholarship is available for both the Auckland or the Christchurch based campuses.
For the past four years MAINZ has joined the Rockquest to find the most inspiring young musician. Last year this was won
by Dylan Elise, drummer for Wellington band "Name Pending", who will move on up to Auckland to study the Certificate of
Contemporary Music Performace. Elise has since toured up and down the North Island amassing a legion of fans due to his
incredible drumming expertise and has been voted in an online poll the 5th best drummer in New Zealand ahead of the
likes of The Angels' Brent Eccles, Frank Gibson Sr. and Beaver, formerly of the D4.
The Director of MAINZ, Derek Keene, says "We are delgihted to be part of the Smokefree Rockquest because it is a
training ground for New Zealand's future musicians. Jesse is a great example of the highly talented young performers who
are coming forward."
The Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand is a division of Tai Poutini Polytechnic, that has a reputation for quality
specialist training programmes. MAINZ staff and students share a passion for music and create a vibrant learning
environment, frequently commented on by visitors. Students are able to work with others across all the seven programmes
and are taught by practising industry professionals.
