A successful year for local content
NZ On Air revealed significant investment in public broadcasting content in its annual report, tabled in Parliament
today.
Over 900 hours of television programmes, 170 music videos, programmes for commercial radio audiences, Radio New
Zealand's two networks, 9 regional TV stations and 11 community access radio stations were supported by NZ On Air
funding. Over $107 million in total was invested in local broadcasting.
"NZ On Air is a unique organisation in the world, with its focus on providing content for a variety of audiences," said
chair Neil Walter. "Our focus on contestable funding means we choose the best available ideas, irrespective of
broadcaster or programme maker."
This means there's something for everyone – including upcoming Sunday dramas,The Investigator andLovely Ritaon TV One, What Nowand The Unauthorised History of New Zealandon TV2,Outrageous Fortuneandbro'Town on TV3, programmes for ethnic and special interest communities on access radio and regional television, and classical
music on Radio New Zealand Concert.
"Our approach means that public funding is put to excellent use, in a risky and competitive environment, with everything
making it to air," said Mr Walter.
This year NZ On Air also celebrated funding over 15,000 hours of local TV programmes since its creation in 1989.
Looking ahead, NZ On Air noted that planning had begun for an innovative new portal, NZ On Screen. "NZ On Screen is our
major digital initiative," said Mr Walter. The portal, run by an independent Trust, will allow unprecedented access to
archived screen material made in New Zealand. "It will be a major showcase for our country's screen culture and a
wonderful resource for New Zealanders," he said.
