Out of the waves in a wedding dress

Wellington has a rare opportunity tomorrow to view cutting edge new work by Whanganui UCOL Time-based art students.

A screening and performance of their work will show at the New Zealand Film Archive at 7.30pm tomorrow (Thursday 18 October). It will include short films, visuals, live cinema and sound.

The short videos consist of video work from year 1 through year 4 students in UCOL’s Bachelor of Fine Arts programme and the Graphic Design degree. The students say the work is generally oblique, personal, non narrative, dream-like and poetic, ranging from the humorous to art banal.

As an example, one student has created a short vignette about rising out of the waves off Wanganui in her wedding dress. Another rolls a glass eye in his mouth so the lips form eye lids in a self portrait of angst.

A first year student has created a performance video of another student walking in a paddock covered in gauze while trailed by many metres of the same material. A student who returned from an exchange programme last year at the Rhode Island School of Design will do a performance in conjunction with her video.

All of the works are part of assignments or self directed projects from the sculpture and design programmes at Whanganui UCOL.
The performance and screening shows at the New Zealand Film Archive, Taranaki Street, Wellington at 7.30pm Thursday 18 October.
