BATS Theatre is 18 years young on April Fools’ Day!
To celebrate BATS is having a Party to raise funds for a much needed air conditioning system. We’d love to see you there!
1 Kent Terrace April 3, from 7pm – come along and get initiated!
From selling Guy Boyce’s hand-painted underwear in 1989, to hosting the winning Best Production and Most Original Production for third time in a row in 2006 – BATS has come a long way, baby!
The Eggs will be playing from 10:30pm, with support from The Real Hot Bitches, SoulNine and Duke Fez. This is not only an important event on the Wellington scene, but also an amazing fundraising event to keep BATS delivering the innovative theatre goods. It’s a secret societies party with prizes for the person who can join the most societies, fabulous costumes, and the best secret handshake!
They will also be amassing everyone’s favourite BATS Theatre memories on the night. The BATS crew reminisce – “We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve faked orgasms…”
‘My first
show in Wellington was in BATS Theatre. Along came a couple
guys who wrote their first play and put me in it. It fit
all the stereotypes: set in a flat with a couch centre
stage, the female roles totally underwritten, and a fake
orgasm! But it was hilarious and we were hilarious.’
Clare Kerrison, Business Manager
‘I directed
Shootout for the Young and Hungry Festival in 2001. It was
one of the happiest theatre experiences I’ve had –
making theatre with incredibly keen emerging artists, and
cheerfully throwing rules out the window. Since then I’ve
experienced about 160 opening nights at BATS, and it’s a
privilege to be around live energy and innovation.’
James Hadley, Programme Manager
‘The night the Ju Ju
Crew played at The Pit Bar has to be my favourite. It was an
intimate gathering of great people and great music. It’s
primo to see that gigs are cranking and life is breathing
through the theatre. Looking forward to many, many more
nights like that.’
Daniel Greer, Front of House
Manager
‘I wept and wept on my husband’s shoulder
after seeing Hate Crimes. The show was visceral, relevant
and deeply screwed up – all the things I crave in a piece
of theatre!’
Mia Judkins, Theatre
Publicist
