RNZB’S
TOWER Tutus On Tour In A Town Nearest You
The Royal New Zealand Ballet is preparing to dance on your doorstep from Kaitaia to Invercargill with TOWER Tutus On Tour 22 February to 5 April 2007.
The company will give more than 60 performances, working together with local presenters in each of the 48 centres in the North and South Islands.
“TOWER Tutus On Tour is an incredible opportunity for the Royal New Zealand Ballet to perform in communities throughout New Zealand celebrating the very beginnings of our company,” says Gary Harris, Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
The Royal New Zealand Ballet began in 1953 by touring small towns throughout the country, and in these early days people from these communities billeted the dancers.
“This is the RNZB’s biggest tour on our calendar. Every two years we bring a new selection of classical and contemporary dance to as many communities as we can by splitting the company in two and touring the North and South Islands simultaneously,” says Gary.
The programme for TOWER Tutus On Tour spans 162 years of choreography from classical European works to modern day New Zealand.
Stepping up to choreograph for the first time is RNZB company artist Andrew Simmons with Theme and Deviations, drawing on both classical and contemporary dance.
Returning home from the Rambert Dance Company in the UK especially for this season is New Zealander Cameron McMillan, with his latest work Equilibrium that brings movement to the minimalist Violin Concerto by American composer Philip Glass.
Fans of classical showpieces will adore the Pas De Quatre by Jules Perrot, the serene Concerto Pas De Deux by Sir Kenneth MacMillan, and the elegant Raymonda Variations from Marius Petipa.
There are only two performances in Wellington, Thursday 22 February at 7.30pm and Saturday 24 February at 6.30pm at the Westpac St James Theatre. Book your tickets through Ticketek.
