February News
Firstly, congratulations to the first batch of Outward Sound recipients for 2007, who have received assistance courtesy of the NZMIC’s international division. From the IMNZ whanau, Arch Hill Recordings received a Phase Two grant, while Connan and the Mockasins, David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights and the Ruby Suns received Phase One market scoping grants.
In news from Move The Crowd Records, Ethical recently spent 6 weeks in New York recording his forthcoming album; he was also in Asia for 5 weeks to tour as Roc Raider's hype man for a month, visiting China, Japan, Hong Kong and parts of Indonesia. Meanwhile Tyree toured with DJ Sirvere for all of the Australian Big Day Out dates, and he’s scheduled back in Oz in February, March and April for a huge Blazin' tour with Australia's DJ Nino Brown. Young Sid is featured on PNC's new single, the Who Better Than This remix, alongside Mareko, Con Psy, Koma, Louie Knuxx and Scribe.
The Datsuns are signing to US label DRT Entertainment for North America, and their latest album ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ will be released there in early April. David Kilgour’s sixth solo album ‘The Far Now’ is out, and if you get in quick you will get a copy of the limited edition Australasian double, with 10-track bonus disc ‘Orange Feathers’. Kilgour’s seminal band the Clean are also touring in March. SJD has a new single hitting the airwaves later this month, so keep an ear out for Beautiful Haze.
Shapeshifter released their album in Australia in January with the first run of albums selling out in less than a week. They have been on an extremely successful Big Day Out tour in Australia and had a sold out Sydney Festival show; and at Tool’s request they support the band at their sold out side show in Melbourne at the Myer Music Bowl. And after their success at the Big Day Out, and in promotion of their second album 'Violent Ambitions', metal band Sinate undertake their largest nationwide tour yet. The band are also supporting internationals Suffocation, God Forbid, Agnostic Front, Slayer and Mastodon, plus  playing a couple of 'all ages' shows.
Katchafire’s ‘Slow-Burning is still rising in the US radio charts, going from #11 to #6 in the CMJ New World chart, and the album is the most-added at this format so far this year. They have also been invited to play the Reggae On The River festival in the US this year and have other touring offers pending. Fat Freddy’s Drop also appeared in the CMJ New World chart, debuting at #22.
Concord Dawn’s 2003 album 'Uprising' has reached Platinum sales in New Zealand, the first Platinum success for a drum n' bass artist in New Zealand. With 2006's 'Chaos By Design' not far behind it's an achievement the duo hope to repeat. One half of Concord Dawn, Matt Harvey, will be stationed in Vienna for much of 2007 playing music  in Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain and England, while work continues on album no. 5. The pair also have plans for performances with a live band.
Whirimako Black has a very busy year ahead. She’s just played 2 sell-out shows at the Hamilton Gardens Festival; her first DVD will be released in March; she makes 2 appearances at the AK07 Festival; plus she is to performs 2 shows on the main stage at WOMAD. In April she is playing the Christchurch Jazz Festival and in May she’s been invited, along with author Witi Ihimaera, to Italy for the Torino Book Fair and for several other shows in Rome and Milan. ‘Soul Sessions 2’ is also looking likely this year; in September she will embark on her first extensive national tour; and a collaborations album, featuring tracks with many of the artists she has worked with in the past, should be available for Christmas.
Ardijah have a full diary too. First up, they play Te Matatini Kapa Haka Festival on February 24 alongside artists such as Spacifix, Katchafire and Ruia; followed by the Pasifika Festival Opening Night concert on March 9. They they’re off to the USA, playing the Native American Business Conference showcase in Las Vegas, a Seminole Tribe show in Florida, the Aloha Festival in Phoenix plus a series of club gigs throughout March.
The Ruby Suns begin their tour of the UK on February 23 with a set of dates with Memphis Industries labelmates Field Music. They are also being interviewed on BBC6 and doing a live-to-air for Resonance FM. After dates with Londoners the Holloways, the band are heading off for headlining dates in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, and Belgium. Die! Die! Die! are preparing to head to the USA as they’re appearing at SXSW in Texas this March. They’ve also set up shows in other US centres including New York, Boston and Minneapolis before venturing to the UK and Sweden.
OMC’s first single in several years, 4 All of Us, has been released in time for the Human Rights Commission’s Race Relations Day on March 21. The single features Lucy Lawless on backing vocals, as will one of the other tracks. OMC’s Pauly Fuemana has gifted the track to HRC and Lucy is donating her proceeds to Starship. Pauly has also been asked to contribute to a Te Papa project, which will pump up its Pacific Beats exhibit with new sound through an interactive table. Keep an eye too on your TV; 20/20 are putting the finishing touches on an OMC documentary segment which should air in early March.
The Fast Crew will be releasing the 1st single off their 2nd album, What Happened to Yesterday, on Monday February 26th. Tourist, along with Evermore, support a sold out Snow Patrol on February 22; and then they will launch into a nationwide tour for their album 'Minutes Last For Years.' The Kingites are amongst a large lineup playing a benefit show for the Look Good Feel Better charity which supports cancer sufferers; this is happening on March 10 at Auckland’s Transmission Room.
On March 4 a tribute concert is being held for the late Phillip Fuemana at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events centre in Manukau. The concert will feature Dei Hamo, Carly Binding, Chong Nee, DawnRaid, Andrea Tunks, Scattered Time, Matty Rhys, Erhmehn, the Kila Kokonut Krew, DJ Poroufessor, Moizna, Laura Neems; and the Exlat dancers, Ridlah and Fuemana will also be performing. Also look out for the following 3 Albums due out March/April on Urban Pacifika Records: the Urban Tribute Album (featuring the above artists), Gifted and Maori 3 and Wahine Volume 1 (an album of Maori songs sung by Maori women).
Miriam Clancy is supporting the Waratahs on their national shows, and Anika Moa at her Auckland Zoo Music show; plus she’s appearing at the AK07 Festival and the Mt Eden Food & Wine Festival. Future plans include a trip back to the U.S. after being contacted by ex-pat Kiwi singer-songwriter Helen Henderson, who has been making a name for herself in the alt-country country/rock scene.
To coincide with the release of the ‘Reo’ compilation, the Maori Language Commission Mā Te Reo and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa are co-sponsoring a ‘Reo’ tour this month. The shows are free (with the exception of a gold coin entry fee operating at the Turangi, Wangaui and Wellington performances), and award-winning singer/songwriter Ruia Aperahama and band are special guests at all concerts.
Káren Hunter's new album 'Rubble' will be released February 28 at Rakinos in Auckland on Monkey Records, and this show will be followed by an epic 44-date national tour. Luke Hurley's long awaited ‘Best Of’ will be released on the 21st March with a gig at Shanghai Lil’s in Auckland followed by an even more comprehensive 50-date tour. There's no excuse for not catching either of these artists if you're in the country as they are playing literally everywhere over the next few months. Monkey have also just signed Jordan Reyne (who is currently based in Germany) for her new album 'How the Dead Live' to be released later in the year. Look out for the brand new Monkey Records website which is being relaunched as www.monkeyrecords.com on March 1st.
