Couch Soup

30 Plays, 4 actors, 1 couch, no waiting
Couch Soup is turning ten, which makes it the longest running one page/one minute play festival in the Southern Hemisphere. In the two years since taking the festival national, we have staged plays by scores of playwrights from all over New Zealand, from well known emerging writers, (including several delegates of both the 2004 and 2006 Aotearoa Playwrights conferences) to talented newcomers such as Gina Garvey –
“A belated note to say wow and well done to you the cast and crew and everyone else involved in couch soup…congratulations on pulling off such a great show! Was very satisfying to see my piece ‘up there in lights' “
This year we are staging 30 plays by twenty writers, ranging in experience from award winners to those who have never written a play in their lives before. Our writers for 2007 are, in no particular order: K Morris, Andre Surridge, Andrew Porteaus, Kitan Petkovski, David Foote, Ross MacLeod, Alison Davie, Ian Grody, Benny Marama, Lisette De Jong, Barry Lakeman, Neil Troost, Michelle Savill, Jason Hansen and welcoming back Pip Six, Steve Chappell, Desiree Gezentsvey and Steph Christian. The majority of these were selected via an open call for scripts and the remaining plays were written by the cast themselves.
In 2005 Jennifer Lawless wrote, in her review of that years show for salient, that -
“Couch Soup pushes what can be done with theatre but remains accessible; it is perfect for those with a love of theatre and a short attention span. Or those who are just after a nutritious evening out.”
Which we think sums the whole concept up quite nicely, don't you?
