Cultural Phenomenon Screens On Triangle Television
With an expected international audience of 700 million, Triangle Television's Chinese New Year broadcast is far from average viewing. The show, direct from China's CCTV, is its country's television event of the year: a gigantic extravaganza of drama, comedy, acrobatics, opera, song, dance, innovation and tradition, which has drawn record-breaking audiences annually since the early 1990s.
Billed as a "cultural phenomenon", it is believed to be seen by more people than any other annual arts and performance event in the world, and is broadcast live throughout the Chinese mainland, bringing many homes and businesses to a standstill. Even tiny villages, in areas where television is rare, gather together to watch as a community.
Triangle Television will screen the programme live and uninterrupted by commercials. Chief Executive Officer Jim Blackman says its sheer scope and spectacle will appeal not only to New Zealand's Chinese communities, but to many other Kiwi viewers.
"Anyone who has experienced Chinese New Year, anywhere in the world, will know what a fantastic celebration it is," Jim says. "But this programme, from the very heart of China, has to be seen to be believed; it's nothing short of amazing. We're thrilled at being able to screen it live to New Zealand audiences, and we know it will appeal to wide range of viewers here."
The show goes to air in the last hours of Saturday 17 February. It begins on Triangle Television Wellington at 11pm, with messages from leading members of the city's Chinese community, compiled by NZ Asia TV for Triangle. Triangle Television Auckland's viewers can tune in from 11.30 pm onwards. In both cities, the New Year spectacular will continue until 8am on Sunday 18 February.
