Matarangi Summer Carnival Kicks Off 10 Days of Action Packed Fun
The Matarangi Summer Carnival kicks off today heralding 10 days of action packed summer fun at the popular Coromandel
Peninsula holiday spot with a line up of annual favourites and exciting new additions to the programme.
Feature events this year include the opening event in the Pro Tour Beach Volleyball tournament on January 2 & 3. Matarangi will host the first round of this high performance beach sport before it moves onto other beach locations
around the country. Matarangi Summer Carnival spokesperson Alan Copeman says the pro volleyball tour is a great
spectator sport that attracts big crowds over the two day event as well as bringing valuable television exposure for
Matarangi.
There’s more action on January 7 when the Thundercat boats take to the water off Matarangi for a day’s racing action.
This high adrenalin sport sees two person crews race at high speeds in surf conditions, using their own body weight to
stabilise the boats and achieve maximum speed. A highlight of the day will be a four boat celebrity race.
For those who want to take a more laid back approach, Matarangi’s popular Omara’s Restaurant & Bar is the venue for a one off concert by Kiwi singer songwriter Donald Reid. Reid, who wrote several popular tracks
for The Feelers, recently released an album of original material called ‘In a Taxi Home’. The January 6 concert is
already sold out.
The annual Miss Matarangi competition, also on January 6, is always popular and this year the judging panel will include
celebrity judges Marc Ellis and Donald Reid.
Alan Copeman says, “We also have all the usual favourites such as the sandcastle competition, the big dig, the cardboard
boat race and a kids’ duathlon. Matarangi is a hugely popular summer holiday spot. The population of 200 swells to more
than 5,000 over the traditional holiday period.”
