NATHAN HAINES with UK guests Vanessa Freeman and Mike Patto
NZ SUMMER TOUR 07
Nathan Haines presents another all star line-up featuring direct from the UK vocalist Vanessa Freeman (Azymuth/4Hero)
and keyboardist and producer Mike Patto (Reel People).
Vanessa Freeman and Mike Patto have been part of Nathan’s UK band for several years, and both were important contributors to Nathan’s UK albums Sound Travels and Squire for Hire. Vanessa has contributed to albums from 4Hero, Reel People, Kyoto Jazz Massive and many others as well as releasing her own debut album Shades on Chillifunk. She guested with Fat Freddy’s Drop at London’s Hammersmith Palais earlier this year and has earned the reputation of being one of Europe’s most exciting and original voices.
Mike Patto is one of the top producer/keyboardists in Europe at the moment with his band Reel People, who released their debut album Second Guess on US label Defected Records to much critical acclaim. Reel People recently played the Southport Weekender and London’s revamped Ronnie Scotts.
Joining Vanessa on vocals will be New York based singer/songwriter Tama Waipara, who has released two albums on the German label Obliq, and has recently returned to live back in New Zealand. He joined Nathan on stage at several festivals and gigs in the UK earlier this year, and is contributing vocals to Nathan’s new album,
due to be released next year.
Puerto Rican born Miguel Fuentes, an internationally acclaimed percussionist who has played for many of the world’s top jazz and soul artists including Grover Washington and Patti LaBelle will add genuine Latin fire to the band, and Mickey Ututaonga on drums who featured on Nathan’s 1994 debut album Shift Left.
This will also be a chance to hear live versions of new material from the next Nathan Haines album. Working with co-producer and beat maker Chris Cox the pair have been working hard over the last six months assembling songs and sounds for Nathan’s 6th solo album. “I only get one chance a year to put together a band like this in New Zealand, and it’s amazing to feel part of all that energy in one place at one time” says Nathan. “Together we do things which we could never achieve alone, and having Mike and Vanessa here from London is very special for me. We have performed in many wonderful places together since 2000, but New Zealand for us is the most special”.
