Trubridge Receives Paris Design Accolade
Fresh from recently being awarded the editor’s choice for best lighting design by Paris Elle Decoration magazine, renowned New Zealand designer, David Trubridge, is set to take centre stage in December with an exhibition of his latest works at essenze.
David who is well known for his contemporary furniture said receiving the editor’s choice award was a great honour and one that is highly regarded in local and international art scenes.
“Each year the editors of the various Elle Decoration magazines around the world select their favourite lighting, table, fabric design and so on,” David said.
“To be acknowledged by the French publication is a great honour.”
David said he gains inspiration for his lighting, furniture and decorative items from ‘wild places’.
“These are typically places such as where the sea breaks on beaches and headlands or where land and air meet on mountain ridges.”
Recently, he travelled to the Antarctic with the Antarctica New Zealand Arts Fellows.
“That was a truly profound experience and strengthened my commitment to using sustainable materials in all my pieces.
“Each of them are made from natural resources and I use plantation timber that is being planted at the same rate as it is being used.”
David said the exhibition this month at essenze will feature a number of new pieces such as the new ‘Floral’ lamp – a continuation of his hugely popular ‘Coral’ design.
“There will also be a new range of wooden bowls and a stunning ‘Flax’coffee table.
“I’m really excited about some of the new pieces, as well as some of the larger commissioned pieces I’m currently working on for organisations and private owners,” David said.
“The most interesting pieces include a 14 metre lighting piece for a cinema in Matakana that will be suspended from the ceiling, and a six metre undulating bench seat form for a bank headquarters in Brisbane.”
essenze Director, Clare Mora, said David’s latest work joins a dynamic range of elegant and functional products from leading edge New Zealand designers. They include furniture, lighting, contemporary glass, ceramics, jewellery, home interior and lifestyle items all of which are now on display at essenze.
“New Zealand design and creativity is up there with the best in the world and it’s great to be able to showcase David’s work and that of other exceptional New Zealand designers at essenze.”
The David Trubridge exhibition will be on display at essenze, 285 Parnell Road from 7 December until Christmas.
