Radio New Zealand Website – Huge Growth in Online Listening
Public demand for services from the Radio New Zealand website www.radionz.co.nz has exceeded all expectations since it relaunched with enhanced audio-on-demand functions one year ago.
The upgraded site offers audio from programmes on National Radio and Concert FM in on-demand and downloadable formats, as well as news, programme information, and RSS feeds of news and sport.
The past twelve months has seen a dramatic ten fold increase in traffic to the site with total page impressions now topping 8 million. In its first full year of operation, visitors to the site have requested almost 1.4 million audio items and demand for podcast downloads is still growing at a rate of 8% a week.
Commenting on the figures Radio New Zealand Chief Executive, Peter Cavanagh, emphasised that New Zealand audiences were rapidly embracing the new world of time-shifted listening and noted the impact of the internet on traditional audience listening behaviour.
Peter Cavanagh said digital broadcasting via the internet meant that Radio New Zealand’s national radio networks, National Radio and Concert FM, were no longer restricted to audiences living in New Zealand. Radio New Zealand was now effectively a global broadcaster providing an increasingly important link back home for New Zealanders all over the world.
“Radio New Zealand is now a platform-neutral broadcaster providing its programme content to listeners wherever, whenever and however they want to receive it. “
