Maori Television Wins Second Award for Anzac
Maori Television’s ANZAC Day special, NA RATOU, MO TATOU – THEY DID IT FOR US, took top honours at the 2006 Qantas Television Awards on the weekend, winning Best NZ Sports or Event Coverage.
The accolade follows the recent TV Guide Best on the Box People’s Choice award where the all-day ANZAC broadcast – presented by Wena Harawira and Judy Bailey – won the Best Documentary category.
Maori Television chief executive Jim Mather says the channel also acknowledges its disabled Maori sportsperson show, TOA ANGA WHATI MAORI – produced by Tawharau Media Productions – which won the Maori Sports Media Award of the Year last Saturday (Nov 18).
Other recent programming highlights include the YEAR OF THE VETERAN MILITARY PAGEANT, coverage of the dedication ceremony of the New Zealand memorial at London’s Hyde Park, and last weekend’s 2006 NATIONAL MAORI SPORTS AWARDS.
“These awards are further milestones in the progress of Maori Television and are a clear indication of our ability to deliver an extremely high level of local New Zealand programming as well as consistent coverage of significant public broadcasting events,” Mr Mather says.
“We believe it is critical to provide a unique alternative to the other broadcasters which inherently reflects who we are as a people and a nation.”
Maori Television’s Wena Harawira will again be joined by former ONE News presenter Judy Bailey to co-host the all-day ANZAC coverage in 2007, which will have a special focus on youth.
Maori Television is currently screening the second series of TOA ANGA WHATI MAORI every Friday night at 8.00 PM.
Viewers can call the helpline on 0800 MA TATOU (0800 628 2868) for advice on how to tune in to Maori Television. For more information, go to www.maoritelevision.com.
