Big Band names for Wanganui concert
Dave Dobbyn and Th’ Dudes, plus The Feelers are just two of the acts in a spectacular line-up of big name bands and musicians set to perform in Wanganui on Boxing Day.
The city is set to repeat last year’s hugely popular Boxing Day concert, and in addition to Th’ Dudes and The Feelers, this year will feature Pearl from Wellington and Wanganui based House of Shem.
The concert will again be held at Cook’s Gardens following the Ssangyong Cemetery Circuit Motorcycle Race.
Last year’s concert featuring Jimmy Barnes attracted people from all over the North Island and the concert organisers, Wanganui Inc., said they decided to sign up some big names to attract a similar audience, again this year.
“We had a huge turn-out last year with people travelling long distances to attend, and we have set out to really make Wanganui the place to be on Boxing Day again this year and are expecting a big demand for tickets,” John Roestenburg, from Wanganui Inc said.
Dave Dobbin and Th’ Dudes have just completed a national sell-out reunion tour after temporarily re-grouping but Wanganui will be their first big outdoor gig for 25 years and may be the last time they will be playing together in this manner.
“This is really an opportunity for those fans who missed seeing them during the last few months to listen to them live one last time,” John Roestenburg said.
The Feelers are regarded as one if the most successful bands in New Zealand music history and recently won the award for the most performed work in New Zealand at the APRA Silver Scroll Awards with “Stand-Up”, and at the 2006 NZ Music Awards, 'Stand Up' won the Tui for Radio Airplay Record of the Year.
Pearl, who are Wellington song writers Shelly Hirini and Lisa Nimmo have been together for three years and are best known for their album “No Ordinary Day.” They have recently been named as the sole support act at Elton John’s one-off Wellington concert in December.
Wanganui’s own House of Shem is a family roots reggae band formed in 1998 by South Pacific reggae icon musician/songwriter/performer Carl Perkins formerly of the Herbs and Mana.
“The House of Shem will be featuring their songs from the last two Conscious Roots albums, as well as some blasts from the past. As you can see we have an amazing evening organized with a range of talent with something for everyone,” John Roestenburg said.
“As we expect the concert to have a very wide appeal, and there are a limited number of tickets, we would urge people to avoid missing out, and get in and book their tickets, which now are on sale,” he said.
He said an ‘Earlybird’ special to purchase tickets at a reduced rate had proven very popular, but was only to be available for another 2 weeks. The organizers are also offering a combination ticket for the bike races and the concert.
Tickets are available through Ticketek.
