Another Idol #1
A week after being named the third NZ Idol, 21-year-old Levin garage builder Matt Saunoa has the brand new #1 single in New Zealand.
It’s the second local #1 of 2006 and comes 53 weeks after series 2 winner Rosita Vai vacated the top following a two-week run (Rosita’s All I Ask picked up the Tui for Highest Selling Single at last month’s NZ Music Awards).
Matt’s #1 Hold Out was penned by the feelers’ main man James Reid and gives the composer his first #1 on the singles chart. In fact, Reid tunes bookend the Top 10 this week, the feelers’ One World being #10.
Our new Idol is the proud dad of young Harlyn James and cites Brian McKnight as one of his singing influences. This week he goes where Brian hasn’t - right to the top of the NZ Charts.
And what’s one of Mr Saunoa’s favourite hits? Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, which segues nicely into...
The Best Of The Best Ever
Boston’s Aerosmith formed in the early ‘70s, although their first chart recognition in New Zealand was much later thanks to rap trio Run DMC’s 1987 #1 gold remake of Walk This Way with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.
Now they score their biggest charting album here as Devil’s Got A New Disguise: The Very Best Of Aerosmith takes highest new entry honours on the Albums Chart at #2 this week.
Included on the compile is Run DMC’s version of Walk This Way, along with the band’s only Kiwi Top 10 hit I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing (from the movie Armageddon).
Seventeen years ago Pump was Aerosmith’s first chart set here, peaking at #8. Another best of, Big Ones, reached #4 in 1994. This new collection features material from their CBS/Columbia years and their breakthrough time at Geffen Records.
The New Singles
#1 Matt Saunoa - Hold Out
See story above.
#3 Beyonce - Irreplaceable
Texan Beyonce Knowles follows the first two hits from her sophomore B’Day set, Check It Out (#1) and Deja Vu (#15) with Irreplaceable, straight in at #3.
#9 The Pussycat Dolls - I Don’t Need A Man
LA’s Pussycat Dolls score the fifth Top 10 single from their self-titled former #1 debut set. I Don’t Need A Man has big shoes to fill as the previous four Doll hits all topped the chart. Lead singer Nicole Scherzinger collaborates with P Diddy on his new record.
#19 Evermore - Light Surrounding You
Visiting locals Evermore place their current Australian Top 10 hit in at #19 in its first week of release in their homeland (although it must be pointed out that the oldest Hume brother Jon was actually born in Oz and came here at a very young age). It’s the second cut lifted from their sophomore Real Life long player and is #9 on the RadioScope100.
#20 Various (High School Musical) - We’re All In This Together
High School Musical spawns its second hit We’re All In This Together, new at #20. The set’s lead single Breaking Free is #38, while the soundtrack album is #13, with a new version out this week featuring karaoke versions from the film. The TV movie’s female lead Vanessa Hudgens is meanwhile #36 on the RadioScope100 with her debut solo single Come Back To Me.
#25 Justin Timberlake featuring TI - My Love
Justin Timberlake teams up with TI for the follow up to his #1 smash SexyBack and the second hit lifted from his second solo album. It’s not the first My Love to chart here, that honour goes to Englishwoman Petula Clark 40 years ago when her My Love reached #6. Sir Paul McCartney’s group Wings took their My Love to #3 in 1973, not forgetting Lionel Richie’s ‘80s radio hit of the same name. All are completely different tunes; they just share the same title.
#27 The Game - It’s Okay (One Blood)
Straight outta Compton comes The Game (aka Jayceon Terrell Taylor). It’s Okay (One Blood) is the lead single from his sophomore album Doctor’s Advocate (due mid month).
The New Albums
#2 Aerosmith - Devil’s Got A New Disguise: The Very Best Of
See story above.
#8 Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist
Two-time Grammy winners the Deftones bag their first New Zealand Top 10 album with Saturday Night Wrist. The 2003 BDOers first charted here in July 2000, reaching #14 with the platinum-selling White Pony.
#14 Boney M - The Magic Of Boney M
German-based and produced by Frank Farian, Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, Maize Williams and Bobby Farrell are the West Indians who make up Boney M. The group hold the record for the longest running #1 single in New Zealand (14 weeks for Rivers Of Babylon / Brown Girl In The Ring in 1978), although there’s never been a chart-topping album. They rack up their 10th NZ Chart set this week with The Magic Of Boney M, new at #14. It’s not the first Magic Of titled set for the foursome. In 1980 a different Magic Of compile hit #2, while a further hits set, Gold - 20 Super Hits, spent 5 weeks at #2 to in 1993.
#27 Korn - Chopped, Screwed, Live & Unglued
Korn celebrate their 10th year of hit albums in New Zealand with their eighth album Chopped, Screwed, Live & Unglued, new at #27. Their first Virgin set See You On The Other Side charted just under a year ago in December 2005.
#36 John Legend - Once Again
The sophomore set for three-time Grammy winner John Legend debuts at #36 this week. It follows up 2004’s #35 Get Lifted. John’s real surname is Stephens (not to be confused with our own Jon Stevens!). The ‘Legend’ moniker came from his friends who reckoned he sang like an old school legendary artist.
