Graduation Season 2006 offers a sweeping view of the New Zealand School of Dance’s past and present with a mesmerizing
glance into the future. The season opens on Wednesday 15 November with eight distinct works.
We celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth with legendary choreographer George Balanchine’s intoxicating
Divertimento No. 15. Divertimento No 15 is the second ballet that Balanchine created to Mozart’s Divertimento in B flat
major K 287 which was composed in 1777. A pure dance work that seeks to visualise the understated elegance, exquisite
filigree, and sweet playfulness of Mozart’s score, Divertimento No 15 has been characterised as “cut crystal rather than
diamond glitter”. We continue the exhilaration of Balanchine's work with his stunning pas de deux, Tarantella.
The programme will also include Michael Parmenter’s visually stimulating The Bach, Val Caniparoli’s emotionally charged
Aria and sure to be a crowd pleaser, Robert North’s Troy Game, pulsating with wit and masculine energy.
Troy Game is a cheerful, tongue-in-cheek display of male strength, rich in bravado and humour. It begins as a homage to
the ancient warrior spirit, but as the beating of the South American drumming grows increasingly insistent, the 13 men
are drawn into a spectacular, competitive dance and hilarious results ensue!
Additionally there will be two searing new works from foremost New Zealand choreographers Shona McCullagh and Malia
Johnston whose contemporary sensibilities are certain to excite you.
Hailed by The NZ Listener as a ‘dance highlight of the year’, this is an event not to be missed!
