Anthony Wilding honoured by latest Ryman Healthcare development
New Zealand’s greatest ever tennis player Anthony Wilding has been honoured by the latest Ryman Healthcare development.
Listed retirement village operator Ryman today named their retirement village at Aidanfield in Christchurch after the
champion early 20th century international tennis star.
The Anthony Wilding village will officially open early next year.
Wilding was arguably the greatest New Zealand sports achiever ever. He won four Wimbledon titles, two Australian Open
titles and four Davis Cup titles.
Captain Wilding was killed in action in France during World War I on May 9, 1915.
Ryman Group Sales Manager Debbie Jarratt said the company was delighted it could honour one of Christchurch and New
Zealand’s greatest ever achievers in the international sports arena.
``Wilding was someone who achieved greatness in his field of endeavour. His four consecutive Wimbledon titles put New
Zealand on the world map in the early 20th century. No other New Zealand sports person has won so many championship
titles in such a popular sport as tennis.
``It was so logical for us to honour Wilding, with Christchurch being his home town. His record as a New Zealander at
the highest level is unparalleled.’’
The Anthony Wilding Village will be home to over 200 residents and employ over 100 staff. The village will offer a range
of options from independent townhouses, serviced apartments, resthome to hospital level care.
