First Vegetarian Film Festival
New Zealand’s first Vegetarian Film Festival will be held this Sunday (October 8th) in Auckland and Christchurch.
The one day festival will be showing a mix of short and full length movies with a vegetarian ethos. The event ties in with national celebrations for World Vegetarian Day.
“Film Festivals are celebrations,’ says spokesperson Aaron Koolen, “so why not celebrate World Vegetarian Day with a look at how vegetarianism is portrayed in film?”
“Vegetarian butchers, health food shop managers and an activist mother are just some of the characters that feature in the films,’ says Mr Koolen. ‘Not to mention a claymation battery hen rescuer and the postman and the gardener who took on Mc Donalds.” Mr Koolen believes the issues and characters presented in the films show a variety of vegetarian lives and experiences.
Film goers, who are expected to be a mix of vegetarians and non vegetarians, will be treated to vegan ice cream, pop corn and other snacks on the day, with lucky festival goers winning spot prizes of vegetarian restaurant passes, cook books or vouchers.
The Vegetarian Film Festival will be held in Auckland at The Academy Cinema, Lorne St and at the Southern Ballet Theatre, Arts Centre in Christchurch. Session 1 is at 3pm in Auckland, and 5pm in Christchurch. Session 2 is to be held at 8.15pm in Auckland, and 8pm in Christchurch. Tickets cost $10 per session and are available at the door.
