Ashley Adds More Wins at RS:X Worlds
Tom Ashley is still lying 2nd, now three days into the RS:X World Championships in Lake Garda, Italy. Barbara Kendall
slipped from 3rd to 11th.
"Today was great - had another two bullets," says Ashley. "The conditions were different to the first two days with a
light offshore wind instead of the thermal onshore wind we had been racing in before. My speed is great and I made a few
good tactical calls to keep me at the front of the fleet."
Adding the two wins to his total overnight, Ashley is now on equal points with Casper Bouman, NED who holds first place
in the men's division. A rest day is scheduled tonight following which the fleets are shuffled and the top 40 men will
resume racing in a Gold fleet. Three days of competition take place before the top ten sail a final medal race.
"I'm really looking forward to racing in the Gold Fleet with all the other top sailors," says Ashley.
Despite Kendall's slip to 11th on the leader board, she easily makes the women's gold fleet. Both Hayley Thom and
Steffanie Williams also made the top half of the 80 strong women's fleet, currently sitting 38th and 39th respectively.
Alabau Neira of Spain took the lead in the women's division overnight, now one point ahead of Klepacka of Poland.
JP Tobin is currently in 19th, also making the top 40 cut for the men's gold fleet with consistent performances in the
first three days of competition. Four fifth places and two sixth places are on the board for Tobin who improved
overnight from 23rd up to 19th overall.
Racing resumes Wednesday night (NZ time). The regatta concludes with a double points medal race on Saturday.
