20 664 plastic collar stays, have secured a place in the Montana World of WearableArt® show hall of fame for Auckland pattern maker Rodney Leong.
The Love of Icarus, is inspired by the quote “On certain night, when there is a full moon and the stars lay cast out, a shadowy figure can be seen floating within the moon.”
Rodney is no stranger to the creative world; he holds a diploma in Textile design and a Diploma in fashion design and technology. In 2003 he was hand picked by international designer and judge Trelise Cooper after she saw his work in the 2003 Montana WOW Awards.
Rodney, has been entering the WOW Awards® show since 1989. Never afraid to try new things, Rodney has created garments in everything from hand painted silk to recycled zips. In 2005 he won the Tourism New Zealand Avant Garde section and won the Latitude Nelson Birthplace of WOW, runner-up to the Montana Supreme WOW® Award.
Rodney says.
“It’s the freedom to try new things with fabric and design and the ability to ignore the constraints of a commercial fashion career that I am drawn to. There are no expectations of what you should create when entering WOW, only the aim of personal growth and the abilities of your own imagination.”
Wellington plays host to the Montana World of Wearable Arts Awards® for the second time. A dynamic and diverse range of entrants entries are showcased in 2006. 41 international and over 120 national entries parade across the cat walk bring WOW® to life.
Aliens dance, sand pours from the ceiling, contortionists tie themselves into knots and the world goes a dotty. What could be more Wowing!
