Number-8 ‘weirdness’ wins Golden Jandal
The ninth annual Radio Active 89FM Handle the Jandal DIY music awards were held tonight, with Wellington fashionista
Sally Tran scooping the field to win the Golden Jandal for the favourite music video.
Sally Tran won the award for Charlie Ash’s O’Baby, also picking up the award for Best Concept earlier. The Favourite
Music Video was voted by a nationwide txt-vote and the audience at Wellington’s Embassy Theatre.
Marc Smith came in second for the video for The Video Kid’s DJ’s Girlfriend, with Mark Williams for Agent Alvin’s Who’s
Your Daddy coming in third.
The applause was deafening for Dean Hewison’s hilarious F**K You, Orlando, for the way Wellington women swooned over
Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom, as singer Mathew Saville butchered the Hollywood star after the actor shagged
Saville’s girlfriend.
Winners for the judged categories were:
- Best use of exploitative tactics: Dean Hewison for Mathew Saville’s F**K you Orlando (Wellington)
- Best editing: Filthy Joe Smoker for The Sorecock’s Lucyfer(Auckland)
- Best Cinematography: Mark Summerville for Battle Circus’ Send in the Clones (Auckland)
- Best Concept: Sally Tran for Charlie Ash’s O’baby (Wellington)
- Best Animation: Toby Donald for Boss Christ’s El Bandido (Wellington)
- Rising Star: Ed Lust for Arkitype’s Shut Eye (Christchurch)
Event manager Sam Hayes said the quality of this year’s entries was high. “The videos were all individually outstanding.
They’re packed with brilliant concepts, it’s been a treat to see them on the big screen at the Embassy,” said Ms Hayes.
“We’ve seen 93 bizarre and beautiful films, suffered through lots of landscape shots and overall we’ve been blown away
by the talent out there. There’s kiwi ingenuity and home-grown humour all mixed up into a bunch of number-8 wired
weirdness,” she said.
Radio Active station manager Dave Gibbons, who helped initiate the event nine years ago, said Handle the Jandal was now
recognised as a major event on the independent scene.
“Handle the Jandal is the biggest night in the country for up’n’coming and indie filmmakers. Next year is our tenth
anniversary. Tonight was great, everyone had a great time, and next year will be even bigger and better,” he said.
