Handle the Jandal ’06 DIY music video awards
The ninth annual Handle the Jandal Do It Yourself music video awards are being held this Wednesday evening at Wellington's Embassy Theatre, presented by Radio Active 89FM.
Handle the Jandal is the annual competition for amateur and professional New Zealand filmmakers to create music videos for local bands and artists. To encourage rising talent, all videos must be completely self-funded and may only use New Zealand music.
The event awards nine Golden Jandals across seven categories. Fifteen finalists compete for the Golden Jandals, chosen from 93 entries. The fifteen include finalists from Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch.
The Judges for the final round are filmmaker and Oscar-nominee Taika Waititi, Frontseat arts producer and broadcaster Gemma Gracewood and music video producer Warren Green from Sticky Pictures.
The major award is the Golden Jandal for the Favourite Handle the Jandal music video, voted for by viewers via txt messages and the audience on the night. Txt voting ends midday Wednesday September 20. The prize is $10,000 worth of use of Peter Jackson's Park Road Post facilities.
The other six categories award the best use of exploitative tactics, editing, cinematography, concept, animation, and rising star.
Handle the Jandal is a significant event for developing cutting-edge New Zealand filmmaking talent. Previous winners include Rollo Wenlock, who has gone to film for The Prodigy and Sione's Wedding director Chris Graham.
