Queenstown garden named 2006 NZ Landscape of the Year
A stunning New Zealand native garden on the shores of Lake Wakatipu has taken top honours at the LIANZ 2006 New Zealand
Landscape of the Year Awards, announced in Tauranga this weekend.
Organised by the Landscape Industries Association of New Zealand (LIANZ), the biennial awards recognise excellence in
design, horticulture, construction, garden management and maintenance and use of native plants.
The supreme award, the Living Earth and Central Landscape Supplies 2006 Landscape of the Year Award, was won by
landscape designer Ralf Kruger of Greenbelt, a division of Morgan + Pollard in Queenstown.
The judges described Kruger’s winning garden in Kelvin Heights in Queenstown as “an arresting waterfront landscape with
an elegant contemporary design that enhances its outstanding setting.”
“This extensive and dramatic garden presents magnificently against the backdrop of Lake Wakatipu. It is an exceptionally
well-executed garden where everything is in immaculate order,” says LIANZ Awards lead judge Robin Shafer.
Seventeen gardens, from Fiji to Gore, were honoured at the LIANZ Awards this year, with the judges awarding 14 golds, 6
silvers and 5 bronze medals.
The other supreme award winners this year were:
The Daltons Best Residential Garden Award went to Mark Read of Natural Habitats, for a secluded subtropical Auckland
courtyard in Parnell.
The Naturally Native NZ Best Use of Native Plants Award went to Arne Cleland of Pukerau Nursery for the distinctly Kiwi
garden surrounding Gore Vets in Southland.
The Ellis & Co Best Garden Maintenance/Management Project was awarded to Bark Ltd in Wellington for their care of the gracious
grounds at Government House. Bark Ltd also won a silver medal for managing the grounds at Parliament.
