Maori Writing Goes Global
'Tukua - Just Let It Go!' Is the theme for the 2006 Maori Writers National Hui which aims to give a global perspective on the industry and opportunities for Maori writers.
Maori writers working in all areas of literature and the writing industry will gather together in Wellington on 6 - 8 October to attend the hui. A feature of the event will be keynote speeches from esteemed writers and academics Witi Ihimaera, Bill Manhire, Hirini Moko Mead and others.
Cath Fitzgerald, Apirana Taylor and Rim D Paul are some of the names that will facilitate workshops in fiction, film, performance, lyric writing, and storytelling. Publishers' forums will see representatives from New Zealand publishing houses bring their advice and commentary to the table.
Evening functions will feature top Maori writers as well as performances by Maori musicians.
‘On the Bus: Evening of Readings & Music' on Friday 6 October will feature novelist James George accompanied by others reading from their works. ‘A Night with Puatatangi' on Saturday 7 October will see Maori musicians convey the beauty of the Maori language through their music. Both evenings start at 7pm and are open to the public.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Maori writers to network together and for the rest of the New Zealand literary industry to take notice” says James George, Maori writer and convenor of the event.
“Maori writers are supported hugely by New Zealand publishers and book readers, but we rarely have the chance to discuss important issues or celebrate our writing for ourselves” he adds.
Presented by Toi Maori Aoteaora, this will be a premier event for Maori writers - an important occasion for the sharing of minds and for marking Maori literature's pathway throughout the writing world.
