Fashion Makes a Bold Statement That is Complete Trash
The annual event that draws a crowd of over 5,000 - contestants, contributors and performers; returns to Waitakere City this November, for the 11th record year of the TRASH TO FASHION® Awards Showcase.
Famed for large-scale theatricality and breath-taking spectacle, TRASH TO FASHION® is New Zealand’s largest recycled fashion event. Created entirely from recycled, inorganic and organic materials, garments submitted for this year’s competition closed over the weekend. Organisers are thrilled at the exceptional standard of highly artistic, inventive and theatrical costumes received from a wide range of emerging, established, novice and young designers from the USA, The Netherlands, Australia, and from all over New Zealand.
Acknowledging the huge impact our environment has on the New Zealand way of life, this year’s event carries the theme of ‘The Natural Environment’. Eight categories have been carefully engineered with this in mind, giving well over 200 selected entrants the opportunity to incorporate the natural environment into their designs.
This year’s audiences are also encouraged to celebrate the ‘natural environment’ by sitting close to the action. For the first time, seating has been made available in front of the grandstand block at The Trusts Stadium; a new design which will put many within arms reach of the stage and right at the centre of the ‘enchanted rainforest’, that is the setting for this years exciting awards presentation.
A professional cast of forty strong dancers, actors and models will emerge from within this intimate landscape to present a stunning theatrical showcase, celebrating the extreme talents of designers who have, in some cases spent hundreds of hours constructing a garment from the rubbish piles created by our consumer society. Many of the stories behind the creation of these garments are humourous, moving and completely astonishing!
A panel of 5 judges is responsible for deciding the winners of each category and for the overall winner of the Supreme Award. Selected from the arts, design and fashion world, this panel will be announced at the end of September. This year also sees the return of Creative Director - Carla Martell alongside a professional team of designers, technicians and production staff, all set to make TRASH TO FASHION® a highlight of the 2006 entertainment calendar.
Waitakere City Council, Keep Waitakere Beautiful and the Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts are delighted to confirm this year’s ‘natural environment’ entry categories. These are - WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (primary and intermediate students, ELEMENTAL (Secondary school students), OFF THE BEATEN TRACK (Menswear), LIVING EARTH (100% biodegradable), MOONLIGHT SONATA (glamour section), GREEN PARTY (Street wear), THE INORGANIC COLLECTION (industrial and inorganic) and GLOBAL SWARMING (cultures from around the globe).
