To the 'World Premiere' screening of NGATAHI - KNOW THE LINKS (Part 3) At Wgtn City Art Gallery Cinema On September 23, 2006 at 3:00pm - koha entry
Ngatahi - Know The Links is a five part rapumentary series about arts and activism amongst native and marginalised peoples in twenty countries.
Kicking off part three in Los Angeles with a heavyy dose of consciousness we meet native rap musicians Atzlan Underground and Culture Of Rage, black activists Dedon & Macheo from the All African Peoples Revolutionary Party, Filipina spoken word artist Faith Santilla, poet Mariposa and graffiti artist/muralist Nuke. Then with Bocafloja and Jr from Chillatown Radicals we experience a taste of Mexico City Hip Hop before searching links at ancient Aztec site Teotihuacan, and visiting Zapatista stronghold Oventic, and San Cristobal.
We capture performance from Sundog at the Yukon International Storytelling Festival and hear from group leader Phil Gatensby, and then Nyla Klugie about native struggle and resistence, also Angela and Becky talk about native existence in Canada from their perspectives as 15year old native youth. Deep in Indian Country at Wounded Knee we hear about native reality from Catka Win - Dorothy Sunbear, local rapper Ta-Sina Tanka - Big Robe drops some knowledge and celebrated rap artist / movie actor Litefoot performs at the Native Voice Film Festival 2004. Annie Humphrey sings about 500 years of genocide intercut with William Brave Bird speaking of past and present realities for Crazy Horses' people. Returning to L.A. the closing credits feature Phoenix 5150 from Culture Of Rage speaking on colonisation and what NGATAHI - KNOW THE LINKS is all about - native unity!
Background info:
Production began in 2000 - expected final completion date 2007. Parts 1 and 2 - shot in ten countries (Colombia, Cuba, Hawai'i, USA, Canda, England, France, Jamaica, Aotearoa and Australia,) is available on DVD. Part 3 is now completed, and currently in post-production. Part 4 visits South Africa, Tanzania, Tahiti and Brazil.
