DANCE ON YOUR DOORSTEP:
9 performance works - 43 workshops - 52 films - 80+ events
The BODY ’06 is nearly upon us! With only three days to go, Christchurch’s fifth annual Festival of Dance and Physical Theatre is gearing up for a hive of activity over 17 days. Expect to see dance in all its forms: on, in, and around our stages, streets, and galleries, September 15th to October 1st.
From street dance with UK Hip Hop legends Robert Hylton and DJ Biznizz; poi technique with leading exponent and author, Ngamoni Huata; and stunning dance on film from Sydney's ReelDance Festival; to the best of contemporary NZ talent with the Christchurch débuts of works from Bipeds Productions, Scrambled Legs Dance Theatre Company, Julia Sadler, Java Dance Company, Jack Gray and much, much more...And don’t forget the myriad of public workshops where all can ‘have a go’.
Beginning this week…
The Festival kicks off with Outstanding Feet 2006; a one-night only celebration of the diverse Dance talents of Canterbury youth. Saturday 16th September, 7:30pm, at the James Hay. Book now! $10 from Ticketek.
Mixed-ability theatre group A Different Light brings you Dante. Inspired by the epic poem Divina Commedia, the imaginative journey of the poet Dante through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso to discover the love that moves the sun and the stars. Saturday 16th – Tuesday 19th September, 8:00pm, at Southern Ballet Theatre. $12 & $10 from Court Theatre.
The world premiere from Auckland-based choreographer Jack Gray hits Christchurch for 3 nights only! View From the Gods is a vibrant new dance show: brighter than the promise of springtime, with a dash of zesty contemporary dance, vibing electronica music and kaleidoscopic video (V.J) action. It is an innovative cross-disciplinary design collaboration exploring abstract continuums of space and time.
“Interwoven bodies of work by three Maori contemporary artists"
Saturday 16th – Monday 18th September, 8:00pm, at the Great Hall. $18 & $15 from Court Theatre.
And for those of you who want to try something new: put your best foot forward, come down to the Art Gallery and get dancing!
