Huge congratulations to the TMD Crew - which featured Askew from Disruptiv - who won the first Write4Gold World Final
for graffiti and aerosol art, held in Chemnitz, Germany on August 5. They triumphed over international teams drawn from
21 worldwide regional finals.
Global Routes tell us that the Dead C are celebrating their 20th year with a double 'best of’ compilation and a trip to
the UK to play at Thurston Moore's Nightmare Before Xmas All Tomorrow Parties in December. David Mitchell has released
his first solo record under the nom de plume Leather Apron; it's an acoustic 10" on the UK longlostmusic label. Pumice
(aka Stefan Neville, also in Chris Knox’s Nothing) is touring the US; check his myspace site for details - there is a
great photo of him playing in front of Byron Coley and Thurston Moore's psychedelic vinyl archive.
Dawn Of Azazel recently played 23 dates on the Decades of Death 2006 U.S. tour alongside Vital Remains, Incantation and
Sin Of Angels. They are working on new material, and planning their second Australian tour for 'Sedition' later this
year. The second pressing of 'Sedition' will be released in September and be distributed in the U.S. and Canada through
Red; it features a bonus video for the track The Road to Babylon.
LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)oa are establishing a North American office in Los Angeles this month. LOOP founder Mikee
Tucker, along with music businessman Bennett Freed (who signed Wham!), music publisher Todd Bisson and Jeff Jacquin of
Kurfirst-Blackwell Entertainment have gathered a team of USA music industry professionals to support the venture; these
folk include Earth Wind and Fire’s Maurice White and their business manager Art Macnow, Delilah Films’ CEO Stephanie
Bennett and partner Jim Mervis. LOOP releases Paul McLaney's solo album 'Edin' in September; it was recorded by Dale
Cotton in the old Dunedin New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation studio.
Savage took out two awards from his four nominations at the first Australasian Urban Music Awards held in Australia on
July 21: Best R Single for Moonshine and Best Hip Hop Album for the ‘Moonshine’ album. DawnRaid Entertainment CEO Brotha D was given
the Urban Hero award. Scribe and P-Money won Best Hip-Hop Single for Stop the Music, and P-Money won Best NZ Club DJ.
One Million Dollars have a track on a Hungarian compilation from Radio Café 98.6 in Budapest (the band were also #1 on
their playlist in July). Tracks from their first album ‘Energy State’ have now been on 22 compilations in New Zealand,
Australia, Hungary, Germany and the UK. Their new album ‘Soup Kitchen’ is out September 11.
Die! Die! Die!’s album is set for release in the US and UK early next year, and the band has picked up a major UK
booking agent in Primary (Babyshambles, Oasis, Kylie Minogue etc). They’ve been touring the US and Europe since SXSW,
spending the last couple of months in New York playing a residency at The Annex, where they play their last two shows
(including one with Dirty Pretty Things) before hitting the UK for gigs including Barfly and Artrocker shows. They’re
due back in New Zealand later in the year.
Connan and the Mockasins are keeping busy on the live front in London, and they are supporting the Black Keys on August
30. Suicide Dogs have a string of shows booked in Los Angeles this month.
Resulting from some information circulated by IMNZ to its members regarding playlisting opportunities, dDub have charted
on college radio station CIUT-FM Toronto (with a listenership of 8 million); and they’re also on the DanceHallStyle
Reggae Show on France’s Radio Mega, and National Radio in Australia.
World Battle of the Band heats are now running in Auckland and Wellington, and continue for August and September, while
heats begin soon around the rest of the country. The World final is in Hong Kong in November, and the national final is
October 7th at Hysteria.
Ritalin (as well as Ruptus Jack) are playing the Wasted Festival on September 2 in Melbourne, Australia; joining a
line-up that includes Angelic Upstarts, Peter And The Test Tube Babies, No Idea, Distorted Truth, and many, many more.
Deceptikonz’ second album is being mixed in New York by acclaimed producer Emile (Ghostface, Fat Joe, MOP). Aaradhna
does a promotional tour of Australia in September for the release there of her album ‘I Love You’. Ill Semantics’ first
single, On & On, from their new album ‘Good Musik’ is on the radio now. MC NFA from Australian rap collective 1200 Techniques has
just released his debut solo album ‘Cause & Effect’, which features a collaboration with the Deceptikonz, Who Wan Test? MTV is back on New Zealand television from
August 18, and Savage and Aaradhna performed at the launch.
The Bacardi B-Live OE: Brazil project travellers returned last month; 5 New Zealand musicians went too Brazil to
collaborate with local musicians, record new music for an album and film the event for a documentary. The New Zealand
musicians involved were Barnaby Weir (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties, Flash Harry), Recloose, P-Digsss (Shapeshifter,
The Sunshine Soundsystem), Hollie Smith and Maaka McGregor (Wai 100%).
IMNZ artists have scored some tasty support slots over the next month or so: The WBC are one of the bands supporting
Swedish band Skaladdin, Missing Teeth support Unseen, Suicide Dogs support Peter and the Test Tube Babies, the Sneaks
support the Buzzcocks, and Lawrence Arabia is supporting Okkervil River before he heads off to play in Australia.
Tainted’s When Winter Reigns shows were a success; with fans driving from Timaru for them. They are hoping it may become
an annual event. Tainted’s September tour dates are below; Sinate join them in Wellington.
The Minuit album 'The 88' has now achieved Gold sales status in New Zealand; this is a first for both the band and its
label Tardus Music.
Music from Trillion’s album ‘The Gray Between Shadow and Shade’ featured in the winning Christchurch entry for the 48
Hour Film Competition, The Escort; and Trillion are working on a new album complete with international collaborators
from the USA, UK and Australia. The new Trillion band (Jody Lloyd - vocals, turntable, Rick Harvie - drums, Rich Densem
- bass, Sam Hopley - guitar, vocals, & Mark Duff - synth) is about to start playing live.
The Indie Club has had its last fling at the St James Grand Circle – however the crew are surveying new premises so
watch out for the Club’s return at a new venue. After a break of five months Drill Magazine returns with issue 18, and
features Bill Direen, Lily Green, The Lovehaters, Vorn, The Dark Beaks and many more.
The Nudie Suits are playing the farewell gig of beloved Auckland venue the Odeon on September 16 (it is going to become
an Italian restaurant). It will also be Johnny Pain's last gig as bass player for the Nudie Suits before he moves to
live and work in Singapore for a year.
Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns’ groundbreaking album ‘Te Ku Te Whe’, which brought the sounds of pre-European Maori
instruments to the fore, has been remixed by the likes of Salmonella Dub, Pitch Black, SJD, Stinky Jim, Sola Rosa, The
Nomad, Warren Maxwell (ex TrinityRoots) and Epsilon Blue; the resulting album is out September 4. Olympic composer John
Psathas’ ‘View From Olympus’, comprising three concertos, is also out on Rattle on September 22.
4 Corners have just completed an Auckland schools tour their nationwide release tour for ‘The Foundations’ is in full
effect, with Maia Rata, special guest MCs, DJs and B-boys.
Pearl’s debut album 'No Ordinary Day' is out now via Jayrem; their new single Fall At Your Feet (the Crowded House tune)
is the third Pearl track to make it onto the NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc.
‘Cage for a Song’, Flip Grater’s debut album on Maiden Records, is out now. Christchurch-based Flip has performed at
SXSW and shared the stage around New Zealand with artists Ben Lee, The Shins, Hugh Cornwell, The Phoenix Foundation,
SJD, and Anika Moa.
The first video Blaze ‘Em from Cyphanetik’s debut album ‘Commercial Suicide’ is out August 31, and the album itself will
be in stores October 2nd through Shock Records.
Cobra Khan release their debut EP ‘Sleepless Lions’ September 18th, and they’ll tour the North Island in September and
October. Both Cobra Khan and Cold By Winter have tracks on the forthcoming ‘Taste of Chaos’ compilation due for release
in September. Antagonist are currently on the road in support of their debut album 'These Cities, Our Graves'.
PNC's Just Roll single is out, from his debut album 'Rookie Card' which in stores September through Dirty Records.
Shapeshifter’s album is out August 28 and their album release shows in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch will be
orchestral affairs.
