First North Island Tour for Dunedin Musician.
Dunedin songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Egenes will embark upon his first North Island tour in August.
His “Solo Blast” tour takes from Wellington to Auckland and places in between and places him center stage, where he’ll offer up his own brand of songwriting and storytelling, mixed with some fancy flatpicking and fingerpicking. All this is in support of his new CD release, “Crucifixion”, recorded in Dunedin with Kiwi musicians.
Hailing from Santa Fe, New Mexico (US), Egenes has long been a fixture in the Americana and contemporary folk scene in the southwest United States as both a recording session player and sideman to such artists as Grammy-nominated Eliza Gilkyson and Texas legends Bill & Bonnie Hearne. His chops have also graced the recordings of artists such as Tish Hinojosa, Gary P. Nunn, Christine Albert, Jono Manson, Arrow Memphis, Tom Adler, Jill Stevenson, Jaime Michaels, The Buckarettes and many others.
He has shared the stage with the likes of Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Townes van Zandt, Lynn Anderson, Pete Seeger, Guy Clark, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jerry Jeff Walker, John Hiatt, Robert Earl Keen, Hoyt Axton, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Greg Brown, Ian Tyson, Leo Kotke and Iris Dement, to name a few, and is a seasoned veteran of the road.
Egenes now lives in Port Chalmers and has become a part of Dunedin’s music scene, playing guitar, mandolin, dobro, pedal steel, and other instruments behind New Zealand artists Kylie Harris, Hannah Curwood, the Oxo Cubans and others. That’s his pedal steel, dobro and mandolin work you hear on Anji Sami’s new EP, “El Dorado”.
