American actress Kathy Bates on the jury
of the 30th World Film Festival
MONTRÉAL, July 11, 2006 – Noted American actress and filmmaker Kathy Bates will serve on the jury of the Montréal World Film Festival, it was announced today.
“Kathy Bates honours us with her presence in Montréal," stated MWFF President Serge Losique. "The Festival is pleased to welcome an actress whose tremendous talent has graced so many fine films over the past two decades. Kathy Bates will make an excellent contribution to the 2006 Festival jury with her vision of the seventh art and her extensive experience in film and television. Her participation serves to highlight the MWFF's reputation among cinephiles internationally."
A veteran of Broadway, off-Broadway and regional theatre, Ms. Bates began her big-screen career in 1971 in Milos Forman's TAKING OFF. During the 1980s her talent was showcased in Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, The Morning After, and Dick Tracy. In 1990, she starred in Misery, based on the Stephen King novel, winning an Oscar for her menacing and witty performance as nurse Annie Wilkes. Ms Bates expanded her career with appearances in such films as Fried Green Tomatoes, Diabolique, and Primary Colors (for which she received another Oscar nomination).
Kathy Bates played the Molly Brown character in Titanic in 1997. She starred in numerous other films, including American Outlaws alongside Colin Farrell, About Schmidt with Jack Nicholson, Around the World in 80 Days, where she played Queen Victoria, and, more recently, The Bridge of San Luis Rey. Ms Bates has worked extensively in television, appearing regularly in the series Six Feet Under, and building a formidable career as a small-screen director, in such series as Homicide, NYPD Blue, Oz, Six Feet Under and Everwood, as well as several TV movies, including Talking with, Dash and Lilly and Fargo.
“Over the years, Kathy Bates has become a favourite with filmgoers and critics alike," Mr. Losique noted, "and the MWFF is very proud to have her as a member of its 2006 jury."
