Snowboarders’ Paradise at Cardrona
As the ski area that led the snowboarding revolution in New Zealand, Cardrona Alpine Resort is continuing to support the
growth of the sport in 2006 with the development of its terrain parks, instructional programmes and high profile events.
The addition of the new Beginners’ Trail brings the number of Cardrona’s terrain parks to three, including the country’s
longest trail, the Heavy Metal that runs the length of the Whitestar Express with features exceeding 8m. In a stage of
constant development to keep up with ever more discerning riders, the park has several new features for 2006, including
a wall ride. Add four halfpipes, two built to enlarged superpipe dimensions and shaped by Cardrona’s revolutionary pipe
shaper and you’ve got a freestylers’ paradise for all abilities.
Cardrona’s new High Performance Centre snowboard programmes are run by some of the country’s most respected riders,
including Olympian Juliane Bray who will lead a series of specialist women’s workshops. Other opportunities for riders
wanting to accelerate their learning include the New Zealand Snow Clinics running for between one and four days focusing
on pipe and park techniques as well as a number of youth development programmes aimed at growing the sport from the
grass roots up.
New for novice snowboarders is the introduction of Burton’s LTR (Learn To Ride) System for 2006. This programme was
developed by Burton and snowboard instructors world wide to make learning easy, painless and fun with goal of linking
turns on the first day. Cardrona will equip students with specially developed LTR rental boards and boots designed to
enhance the learning experience and keep them coming back for more.
The Taste Gravity-X Series is a new concept for snowboarders combining training and competition experience on Cardrona’s
800m track. Running one day a week over seven weeks from 14 July, the Series is ideal for those wanting to develop their
boarder-x skills in a competitive environment.
Snowboarding is well represented in Cardrona’s 2006 events calendar including the Cardrona Uni Snow Games (28 Aug – 1
Sept), New Zealand’s official university games; Blue Hogs (4-5 Sept) snowboarding event for New Zealand’s police force;
Cardrona Junior Games (19-23 Sept), the Snowboard Masters (30 Sept) and Cardrona’s flagship event of the season, the
Cardrona Games (7-10 Sept) that will also feature FMX and snowmobiling as well as snowboarding and skiing.
