A Salon of the Year award finalist
Twenty aspiring New Zealand hairdressers are one step closer to realising their dreams with the announcement of the finalists in the industry’s most prestigious competition.
The 2006 L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Awards finalists hail from across the country but come together in Auckland in late July to compete in the country’s premiere ‘live’ hairdressing competition.
There are four major awards including the Supreme Award: New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year, the Young Colourist Award, the Couleur Pour Hommes Award (colour for men) and the Au Début Award (for never before finalists).
In addition to the 20 individual finalists, six salon teams will be vying for the Salon of the Year Award.

The winners will be announced at a glittering occasion at Auckland’s Aotea Centre on Saturday, July 29. The Awards evening will be attended by more than 1,400 hairdressers, celebrities and VIPs and will be hosted by Mikey Havoc and Jaquie Brown.
L’Oréal Professionnel general manager Anya Haarhoff says it is the unique nature of the competition that makes the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards one of the most respected in the industry.
“The L’Oréal Colour Trophy is the only competition that tests the live hairdressing skills of the competitors as well as their ability to create an editorial look through their photographic entry.
“The live competition assesses the skills and ability of each individual hairdresser under pressure, making it closer to a real world situation and a true test of their talents.
“The calibre of finalists this year is outstanding. Our judges are going to have a very tough task indeed!” says Ms Haarhoff.
The judges – UK-based Guy Kremer, Canadian Anna Pacitto and Dennis Langford of Australia – pre-selected the 20 individual finalists from hundreds of photographic entries. The panel assesses entrants on creative and evocative hair colour, an innovative and striking cut, inspired hair styling and finish and overall look of fashion and make-up.
Dennis Langford, managing director of Toni Australia, says the standard of entries was very high across the board.
“My judging skills were sorely tested because there was a lot of excellent work to choose from. However, the outstanding entries were those where a fashionable hair cut, a great colour, a good model and excellent photo composition all worked in harmony,” says Mr Langford.
The L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards are in their 13th year. They are designed to recognise hairdressers who are pushing the boundaries of hairdressing, creating and setting the trends and excelling in this most competitive of industries.
