As the winter sets in much news is coming in about IMNZ artists and labels doing good things in other parts of the world
– in places where it’s hopefully warmer than here!
The latest Outward Sound grant recipients have been announced, which include some of the IMNZ family. A Phase Three
grant goes to LOOP Recordings; a Phase Two goes to Tardus Music (for Minuit); and Phase One grants have been allocated
to Moana and the Tribe, Handmade Records (for Chong Nee), and Mai Music (for Katchafire).
www.spacific.net tells us that IMNZ artists currently gigging in the UK include Connan and the Mockasins (who live there
now), Thin Men (formerly El Hula), Tama Waipera (with Nathan Haines), Concord Dawn and Fat Freddy’s Drop, with
Katchafire heading over soon. Fat Freddy’s Drop recently sold out Brixton Academy and had to add another date (July 8)
to their current European tour on July 8.
Ardijah have been invited to perform in Los Angeles at the American Cancer Society
Festival, and the Gardena Jazz Festival in late August. That month they will also release their DVD ‘Live in Concert at
the Civic Theatre’, and a new single, Natural High. Pacific Curls have just returned from playing Australian
international indigenous festival The Dreaming Festival in Queensland.
Shapeshifter head to Australia for their first shows in over 6 months at the end of July, as they’ve been recording
their new album 'Soulstice' in Kaikoura. These shows will be the release parties of Bring Change, the first single/video
from the album. Their New Zealand album release tour will be in September.
TMet Recordings artist Focus reached No.1 on the online music store Tidydigital chart in May with his track Existence,
and is being played by the likes of Technikal, MDA & Spherical, Trevor McLachlan, Pierre Pienaar, Olly Perris, Dark By Design, Nick Rowland amongst others. Focus’ next
release, 'The Nitrate EP', is scheduled for June 20.
one million dollars' song, Who You Are, from their album ‘Energy State’ (Sugarlicks) reached number 1 on the RadioCafe
98.6FM playlist in Budapest in Hungary. Another song from the album, On This Day, is currently being heard on NZ TV as
part of the new Blood Service advertisement.
Breakin Wreckwordz launches in Australia on July 1, with a party in Melbourne and the release of a mixtape featuring new
tracks and older favourites from the NZ BWW roster, plus exclusives from established Australian artists (Weapon X and
Ken Hell, Mantra, Hykoo, Macromantics, Anecdote, Phrase, Litigate and Fluid). The mixtape is entitled ‘Who The F**k?’,
in keeping with the Breakin Wreckwordz ‘F**k Music’ Mixtape series.
NZ Idol runner-up Nik Carlson recently completed a tour of Samoa. Hamiltonian Pete Fountain is supporting 10CC’s 10-show
nationwide tour.
Lil' Chief have five records out right now or very soon. Out now is The Reduction Agents’ debut album ‘The Dance
Reduction Agents’, the ‘Lawrence Arabia’ album (Lawrence Arabia being the singer/songwriter behind The Reduction
Agents), and the long-awaited Voom album ‘Hello, Are You There?’. Soon they release their first non-New Zealand album
from Japanese artist Shugo Tokumaru, and in July comes the new Shaft album ‘Down At Your Life’. After a successful tour
of the US supporting Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Brunettes’ Jonathan Bree has returned to New Zealand to finish the
new album. Lil Chief titles are now available in Australia through Reverberation Records.
Intergalactic are in international release territory too; they are doing albums from Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Jaggedy
Ann. The World Battle of the Bands is open for entries in all regions. New Zealand heats start in August and the World
Final will be staged in Hong Kong.
dDub are on the road for their 4th Winter Tour. They started with a Comfort video preview gig at Galatos in Auckland and
make their way down the country through Wellington, Napier and on to the deep south to Queenstown, Invercargill, Dunedin
and Christchurch.
Fly My Pretties, featuring Black Seeds front man Barnaby Weir and his all-star lineup of fourteen musicians including
Module, Hollie Smith, Brendan Moran and Luke Buda, play a theatre tour in July.
The Suicide Dogs release their album ‘Breakin’ Away’ on Puppy Killer Records (via Rhythmethod). To celebrate, the
Suicide Dogs are hitting the road along with special guests and label mates Missing Teeth and the Poisoners.
DawnRaid received entries from New Zealand, Australia and as far away as Germany for their Deceptikonz Dear Hip Hop
remix competition. Tommy Ill took first place. Savage, Deceptikonz and Aaradhna were invited to perform in front of
Government House in Samoa.
Hamilton-based hip-hop group 4 Corners’ debut album ‘The Foundations’ comes out on Disruptiv Music July 5, and features
collaborations with Ladi 6, Che Fu, Tyra Hammond, P-Money, Tyna, Maia Rata and more. The crew will tour the country this
August.
Twinset release their new album 'Flavour Country' on June 27. The trio have worked with many in the Wellington music
scene, including Fat Freddy's Drop, The Black Seeds, Deva Mahal, The Eggs, and Scribes Of Ra. The boys are also
following in Fat Freddy's Drop's footsteps and tour jazz venues in Berlin, Frankfurt and Amsterdam in August.
Fabel Music have turned their hand to events, and after a summer of organising concerts in the South Island, they’ve
joined forces with RDU to present the Winter of Discontent programme, which includes shows from the Black Seeds,
Shapeshifter, Fly My Pretties and more.
Tainted supported Blindspott at their Christchurch album release party. Stylus packed the Kings Arms in Auckland for the
launch of their new album ‘Gain Control’ on June 10.
