Safe Announces 2006 Charity Art Auction:
Inspired for Animals
Over thirty high-profile New Zealand artists, photographers, jewellery and film makers, comic writers, fashion designers, tattoo artists, illustrators, and even an Oscar-winning special effects artist, are to donate works to benefit animals in New Zealand.
National animal advocacy organisation SAFE is excited to announce this year’s charity art auction, entitled Inspired for Animals, which will be hosted by Melbourne-based comedian Cal Wilson. SAFE’s promotion manager Amanda Sorrenson says proceeds from the event will be put towards SAFE’s humane education projects.
“SAFE is endeavouring to restore fairness and compassion for New Zealand animals”, says Ms Sorrenson. “The money raised from the works donated by these wonderful artists will be used to help reduce animal suffering.”

“We are delighted to auction so many brilliant works including Richard Malloy’s naively-fashioned rodent sculpture — sprouting albino human hair it speaks of the freakishness of xenotransplantation; Peter Jackson’s personally autographed on-set King Kong poster; and 2002 Walter’s prize-winner Yvonne Todd’s beautiful but eerie photograph of her feline friend”, says Ms Sorrenson.
SAFE will also submit an exciting work to go under the auctioneer’s hammer: a 12 x 3 metre signed billboard skin, featuring Nicky Watson, Charlotte Dawson, Aja Rock and Eva the Bulgarian.
Artworks can be previewed at www.safeart.org.nz from 22 June.
The auction will be held from 7pm, Thursday 13 July at the Hopetoun Alpha located on Beresford Street in central Auckland. Radio and television presenter Camilla will be the evening’s DJ.
SAFE benefits the community. It has been operating in New Zealand for over 70 years and has over 8000 donors and supporters. SAFE provides an important voice for all animals in the community and supports those who are concerned about the wider issues affecting animals.
SAFE is a unique organisation with a vision of compassion and respect for all living beings. SAFE regularly consults with educators, the media, legislators and the general public about the treatment of animals both nationally and internationally.
