specialist, Robert Levin will perform various recitals and concerts with the NZSO as well as including other events
including a screening of one of the finest opera films ever made: Bergman's 'The Magic Flute'
NEW ZEALAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Russian Rendevous Subscription series 3 A new work by celebrated New Zealand composer Gillian Whitehead in her 65th
year, Karohirohi or 'The Shimmering of Light', was written, appropriately, for the harp. It will be premiered by our own
Carloyn Mills. Mozart's piano concerto, K595, is his last and most radiant, written at the height of his powers. This
contrasts with Rachmaninov's first - but expansive and eloquent - symphony.

Russia's most celebrated recent composer. Beethoven's third piano concerto, finished in 1800, clearly outlines the
creative genius of the composer. Shostakovich's fascinating sixth symphony of 1939 is a hit with audiences - with its
epic first movement, whirling scherzo and unbelievably manic and high-spirited finale.

The Magic Flute Overture is the perfect scene-setter for this tempting concert to celebrate the 250th anniversary of
Mozart's birth. Recognised Mozart specialist Robert Levin solos in one the most attractive of the piano concertos - No
24, K 491 - plus a touch of improvisation, and the famous 'Mozart 40', the great G minor Symphony, sets the seal on the
evening.

Bergmann's Magic Flute
Saturday 12 August 8.30pm Embassy Theatre
One of the finest opera films ever mnade, this adaptation of 'The Magic Flute' was sund in Swedish and shot in an
impressive studio reconstruction of Stockholm's famous 18th century Drottningholm Theatre. Bergman said that making this
film "was the best time of my life: you can't imagine what it is like to have Mozart's music in the studio every day."
Requiem
The spirit of the Enlightenment shines through Mozart's music including his Mauerische Trauermusik (Masonic funeral
music), followed here by the eloquence, noble serenity and great tunes of the G minor Symphony No 29 - used for the main
theme in the movie Amadeus. Then comes an unforgettable reminder of Mozart's fragile mortality with the tragic genius of
the Requiem. 59

NZSO Family Concerts
The NZSO is thrilled to announce the return of extraordinary Norwegian musical clown Melvin Tix who performed family
concerts in the lower North Island in 2003. All concerts are 1 hour with no interval and are best suited to 3-10 year
olds and their parents. Melvin Tix will introduce the audience to the orchestra, perform brass solos on a mini trumpet,
trombone and horn and conduct the NZSO. These interactive and fu concerts aim to spark curiosity, interest and enjoyment
whilst introducing children to the wonderful world of orchestral music.
