"The Silver Fern on Her Arse" is a new piece of solo theatre comedy from Craig Geenty, creator of "Train Ghosts" (Best Comedy and Best Performer, NZ Fringe Awards 2005). The play features one performer, whose only props are a rugby ball, a microphone, and a pole-dancers' pole.
Geenty tells the story, through multi-role re-enactment, of Gus, a simple country boy who moves "up north" to go to varsity and follow his dream of becoming a professional rugby player. To give himself a serious chance of making the team Gus invests in some expensive exercise equipment; but then needs to find a way to pay it off. The solution comes in the form of a night-time job as MC at a strip-club.
We follow Gus as he struggles with the temptations and sexual politics of the club, while trying to maintain his focus on his studies and rugby training. We see him bemused and manipulated by a collection of bizzare nocturnal characters, hilariously played by the one performer in an
examination of confused Kiwi sexual communication.
Craig Geenty is a Wellington based actor, soon to appear in the International Arts Festival in the play, "King and Country" by Dave Armstrong.
