'Two Lovers' come to town!
The Commedia Company Aotearoa is thrilled with the response to their current production of 'Two Lovers'. The Nelson
company is currently touring their Commedia dell'Arte traditional performance and half way through the 'off the beaten
track' tour they are delighted with the audience reaction in Palmerston North, Hokitika & Granity.
Kim Merry company director said the audiences are really taking to the style of the show.
"They are enjoying the playing out of the human archetypes and responding strongly to having local issues & personalities referred to in the show."
Two Lovers is based loosely on the story of Romeo & Juliet. Two young innocents meet at the market, fall in love and dream of marrying. In the path of these naive honest
characters swirls an outlandish company of mask characters. The miser mother, hunchback father, lecherous suitors,
pompous doctor and thuggish friend who make true the words "The course of true love never did run smooth." Love however
wins the day, as it must in a just world.
The company, Kim Merry, Jane Fisher, Antony Hodgson, Cynthia Lorrian, and Sita Devi come from a range of performing
backgrounds each bringing a wealth of skills to the company. They have been working together during the past 3 years
training in Commedia performance and building the company.
Commedia dell'Arte is a mask tradition originating in Italy approximately 500 years ago. The travelling companies would
move from town to town picking up local gossip and weaving it into the plays, playing the community back to themselves
warts and all.
So come and cheer on the lovers, hiss at the villains and laugh with the fools in a night of Commedia dell'Arte (The Art
of Comedy)
