Judd hands over Taupo rally lead
After taking the early lead in the Taupo Classic 2WD rally today, Christchurch driver Jeff Judd was forced to relinquish his position after a large rock holed his gearbox.
Driving the Hankook tyres supported Ford Escort BDA, Judd’s early lead came under pressure with gear selection problems following the second special stage.
“We were dropping a bit of time, but got back to the service where the crew did a great job in changing the gearbox. Then we got part-way through the third stage, and a big rock holed our newly fitted gearbox housing– so that was it really.”
Rrelegated to the sideline, Judd said the beautiful weather and excellent Hankook tyres were making for an enjoyable day.
“I’d like to thank our family of sponsors, BNT, ESWA Heating and Hankook Tyres. We’ve decided to leave the car here in the North Island and contest the Hugh Baird Memorial Classic and 2WD rally in a fortnight’s time. We will take the gearbox back with us, get it repaired and then courier it back up.”
Being run on Sunday 4th June in Hawke’s Bays Gwavas Forest, the event will also feature multiple rally champion Rod Millen.
Running in the 2006 Rally Xtreme series, Judd’s first round for the season starts in Southland on the 10th June.
Ends.
