2006 IHC Telecom Art Awards Finalists
The 30 finalists for the 2006 IHC Telecom Art Awards were announced today (see list below). The finalists were selected
from almost 600 artworks submitted by artists with intellectual disabilities throughout New Zealand and will have their
work exhibited at the Centre of Contemporary Art (COCA) in Christchurch from 13th June to 2nd July.
This year's judging panel comprises artists Dick Frizzell and Andy Leleisi'uao, and the Auckland Museum's curator of
Applied Arts, Louis Le Vaillant. Dick Frizzell says the artworks underline the power of art as a means of communication.
"As a judge, I have to base my selections purely on the artistic merit of the artworks and, on that basis alone, the
standard is truly impressive.
For those who view the exhibition, however, the works will take on even greater significance when people learn about the
extraordinary personal experiences of the artists," he said. The IHC Telecom Art Awards were established in 2004 to
foster and showcase the extraordinary talents and perspectives of New Zealanders with intellectual disabilities. The
overall winners will be announced at a national Awards function and auction at COCA in Christchurch on 30th June. The
first place winner receives $4,000, second place receives $2,000 and third place $1,000. The finalists' work can be
viewed online at www.ihc.org.nz, with details on how to bid for individual artworks. Last year's auction of the
finalists' artworks raised more than $11,000. The IHC Telecom Art Awards are part of Telecom's Community Connection
sponsorship programme which provides charitable organisations with more than $5 million in support each year. In 2005,
Telecom's support of the IHC Telecom Art Awards won a NZ Sponsorship Award.
