Magic Circle Mime breezes in from the US
“Not a word was spoken once the music began, but the story was told vividly in both music and gestures, bringing the usually static symphonic stage to life and sometimes spilling over into the delighted young audience.” [Washington Post]
What better way to make orchestral sounds accessible to youngsters than with a breezy, hour-long concert combining the gifts of the MAGIC CIRCLE MIME COMPANY with half-a-dozen or so of Mozart’s “greatest hits”?
On Sunday 11 June, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s annual NZCT PhilharMania! concert features the Magic Circle Mime Company, regarded as one of the world’s premier family attractions. Their highly acclaimed performances, which unite the concert orchestra with visual theatre, are consistently praised for their imaginative, engaging, educational, and innovative content.
The non-speaking comic actors, Maggie Petersen and Douglas MacIntyre, are the creative duo of the Magic Circle Mime Company, and their collaboration with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and soloists Edward Scorgie (baritone) and Austin Hitchcock (horn) is sure to result in riotous fun for the audience of 6-11 year olds and their families.
Maestro Marc Taddei conducts the concert, “The Mozart Experience”, dedicated to Mozart’s 250th birthday. Using movements and gestures only, the mimes lead the story through the Orchestra and through major facets of Mozart's life, to the music of the great composer played by the Orchestra.
As well as the action on stage, “The Music Zoo” provides interactive demonstrations of APO musicians – and their instruments – in the foyer before and after the concert.
