NZ Music Month Music Mile-Stone: Fat Freddy’s Year
It’s 52 weeks since Wellington band Fat Freddy’s Drop opened their chart account at #1 with Based On A True Story. The
album’s stats include 10 non-consecutive weeks at #1 (the most by any Kiwi group), 42 weeks in the Top 10 - including
the last 30 weeks in a row - and the album’s now a breath away from selling seven-times platinum (over 100,000 copies).
There have been four Tui awards along the way (Peoples’ Choice, Best Group, Best Album and Best Aotearoa Roots Album)
they’ve had a RadioScope Airplay #1 and #6 Top 10 single Wandering Eye, critical acclaim, and more press coverage than
just about any local artist in memory.
Based On A True Story matches Christchurch trio the feelers’ #1 Supersystem which racked up 58 weeks on the chart in
1998/99. But it’ll take until NZ Music Month 2007 for Fat Freddy’s to match the all-time chart longevity champ Bic
Runga’s Beautiful Collision, which enjoyed a 101-week run from 2002 to 2004.

NZ Music Month New Music: Nesian’s Big Leap
Heath, Junior, Awa, Donald, Feleti and Dave celebrate both the start of NZ Music Month and the launch of Nesian Mystik’s
sophomore album Freshman, which hits shelves on Monday, by making the biggest jump on the Singles list this week.
If It’s Cool leaps 31 places to #7 in its second week, becoming their fifth Top10-single. The cut is also the
most-played Kiwi song on the radio this week.
If it sounds vaguely familiar that’s because there are samples from The Style Council’s (Englishman Paul Weller’s second
group) biggest hit Shout To The Top, which reached #6 in 1984.
Return Of The Big O
Roy Orbison was born 70 years ago in Vernon, Texas and died of a heart attack in December 1988 at the age of 52. This
week he claims the highest debuting album of the week as The Very Best Of Roy Orbison debuts at #13, becoming his eighth
charting set.
It’s not the first time there’s been a charting Very Best Of Roy Orbison, though. The first was in 1989 (#22) and then a
joint Very Best Of with Fats Domino in 1991 (#18).
The Big O’s first charting album here was also a hits collection 20 Golden Greats in 1980. Roy re-recorded some of his
biggest hits in 1987 for Virgin (at the time a new label) which gave him his highest-charting set the #2 In Dreams:
Greatest Hits. His biggest hit single here came the following year, when You Got It made it to #2.
Roy’s highest charting collection of new material was 1988’s #7 Mystery Girl. September 1992 saw his last charting
single, a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s 1989 #10 I Drove All Night.
The new Very Best Of brings together hits from Roy Orbison’s early-years right up to his last. When he died he was also
a member of the Traveling Wilburys with Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and ELO’s Jeff Lynne.
Then there are his songs which were hits for others, including Linda Ronstadt’s 1977 #3 Blue Bayou and Don McLean’s 1980
#11 Crying.
Roy Orbison was posthumously awarded the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

An Easy Living, featuring lead single and recent UK Top 10 When You Wasn't Famous, is new at #21 this week. Mike’s two
previous albums are 2004's A Grand Don't Come For Free (which peaked at #7) and the 2002 debut Original Pirate Material
(#36).
