NZ Music Month The Centre Of Attention At The Edge® In May
Four Free Concerts at Aotea Square Market & Much More
AUCKLAND, April 27, 2006 “ An exciting line-up of events will be on stage at THE EDGE® as part of New Zealand Music
Month, making New Zealand music the centre of attention in the centre of the city for the month of May.
Four free concerts will be held at Aotea Square Market at 12pm every Saturday in May. Aotea Square Market is already
renowned for its mix of hip new designer fashion, contemporary jewellery, Pasifika arts and crafts and ethnic cuisine.
Adding music to the mix will be:
Saturday, May 6: the new freedom - a large dollop of Pacific pop, with some cheeky funkwah soul, fresh lyrics, a hint of
African spice, solid rock roots rhythms with a shake of r
Saturday, May 13: Farmer Pimp - Providing a sonic mash up, Farmer Pimp mix old school with the new to create uniquely
beautiful music sure to move body and soul.
Saturday, May 20: Definite & Bling “ Auckland based hip hop duo comprised of DJ Definite on beats, cuts and live backing vocals and MC Bling on
lyrics/ lead vocals.
One more band will perform on May 27 (details to be announced shortly).
Another key event at THE EDGE® during New Zealand Music Month is Band of Strangers at the Auckland Town Hall at 6pm
Sunday, May 21. Band of Strangers is a joint venture between STAMP – Creative Development at THE EDGE® and the Play It
Strange Charitable Trust that will see Year 12 and 13 students take to the stage to perform with experienced New Zealand
musicians including The Exponents, Steriogram, Yulia and Deceptikonz. Sixteen songs will be performed featuring up to 60
student musicians playing with any one of the four featured artists or groups. Tickets to Band of Strangers are
available through Ticketek.
Classical audiences can get a New Zealand music fix at the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Series 1, Concert 2 at 6:30pm
Friday, May 26. This concert at the Auckland Town Hall includes Heavy Traffic for contra bassoon by Wellington composer
Michael Norris performed by soloist Hamish McKeich.
The Civic, THE EDGE® will be part of the action with the filming of top musicians for Juice TV. Live from the Winter
Garden at THE EDGE® will feature Lucid 3, Don McGlashan, Donald Reid, Aaradhna, Minuit, One Million Dollars, Nesian
Mystik, Pluto, Luke Thompson, Sarah Brown, Open Souls, Gramsci, Goodnight Nurse, dDub and Boh Runga/Stellar. The half
hour sessions will be filmed over two days and go to air from May 17. (Filming not open to the general public.)
In recent years, THE EDGE® has been increasing its commitment to New Zealand music. It is also the Auckland home of the
APRA Silver Scroll Awards held in September and the home of the New Zealand Music Awards (the Tuis) run by the Recording
Industry Association of New Zealand and held in October.
