Raw War: Paintings by Jocelyn Reece
Exhibition Dates: Friday 31st March – Sunday 30th April
Over the past few years Jocelyn Reece’s work has been based on the idea that there is a universal need to find time to contemplate the past, to become still for a moment for reflection amidst the giddy pace of the present. In Jocelyn’s case this has compelled her to research her family’s personal and historical narratives. In this particular body of work she looks at the loss of identity experienced by our young soldiers in World War I on their return to New Zealand. Leaving with high hopes and excitement to fight for their country, many who returned were shattered in spirit, changed in personality and health, and found little professional support to help them recover. Using the cross as a metaphor, in this exhibition Jocelyn explores the experiences of her own father.

Donna Sarten has recently completed her Masters Degree at the Elam School of Art and is now completing further study. In 2004 she was the joint winner of the Waikato Art Award.
