Veterans' Club:
The comradeship and memories of Auckland's 21 Infantry Battalion
24 March - 21 May
Pictorial Gallery, 2nd Floor
To commemorate the 'Year of the Veterans', Auckland Museum has lovingly re-created the clubrooms of Auckland's legendary
21st Battalion.
Visitors will be able to take a seat at the bar and soak up the veteran's photographs and stories of their time during
World War 2 and the 50 years since.
This exhibition offers visitors a chance to experience the supportive environment of the clubrooms, and discover more
about the veterans during the war, and afterwards. In 2005 the Association was officially disbanded and their entire
collection was gifted to the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
Volcanoes
Presented in association with EQC, the Earthquake Commission
New Volcanoes Gallery
Level 1
What exactly are volcanoes? How do they work? Why are they there? What is their history? Since Volcanoes opened in
December record numbers of Aucklanders have visited Auckland Museum's dynamic new permanent gallery to find the answers
to some of these questions.
The exhibition takes you on a sensory journey that explores the geological, social and cultural impact of volcanoes, in
Auckland, throughout New Zealand and around the world.

Meet our new dinosaur - direct from the cretaceous period via trans-tasman jet charter. Astonishing as it seems,
Auckland Museum now has two dinosaurs! A male dryosaur has been found in the Australian outback and the Museum has
successfully negotiated to fly him to Auckland. The Museum's keepers hope that he will form a friendship with our
dryosaur, Delaurus. Come along these holidays and see how they get on!

Volcanoes
Rangitoto Field Trip
Thursday 20 April - 9am to 4pm
A day trip with a guided walk on Rangitoto - the youngest of 48 volcanoes in the region having been formed just 600
years ago. A great opportunity to explore the volcano and see how life has developed on the cone itself. The range of
plants and animals is now quite diverse and very well adapted to this unique environment. Walk to the summit take about
one hour.
Be Ready Workshops
Civil Defence Emergency Management
The workshops are an opportunity to hear how Civil Defence Emergency (CDEM) works in New Zealand.
The recent weather-inflicted disasters in the United States and Australia serve as a reminder to everyone that when it
comes to disaster planning, it is not a matter of if, but rather when a disaster will strike. Like most regions in
volcanic New Zealand, Auckland is vulnerable to several possible disaster scenarios including eruptions.
We want to ensure that we are as prepared as possible and also remind ourselves that we have an individual
responsibility to be prepared as well.
The free workshops includes a tour of the Volcanoes exhbition which is optional. Click on the link below for dates and

War Memorial Lecture Series
Veterans and Community
Talks, Lectures and Symposium
How did New Zealand change during and immediately after the end of the Vietnam War, and what impact did this have on the
veterans of that war. How were the Vietnam veterans treated upon their return home and what social and health issues did
they experience?
2006 has been declared “The Year of the Veteran” and this lecture series, developed in partnership with Auckland
University, focuses on those New Zealanders who went to the Vietnam war and thankfully returned; those who were opposed
to World War II and those who were left behind.
Admission
Fee: $18 per lecture or $36 for the series
Concession: $13.50 per lecture or $31.50 (Auckland Museum members, full-time students and unwaged)

The Vietnam Veterans
Deborah Challinor
Wednesday 26 April, 7.30 - 9.00pm
As an agent of social change there can be nothing quite as brutal as war. How did New Zealand change during and
immediately after the end of the Vietnam War as a result of New Zealand's involvement and what impact did these changes
have on the veterans of this war? This lecture will explore how the Vietnam veterans were treated upon their return home
as well as the social and health issues they experienced.
BIO
Waikato writer and historian Deborah Challinor's first book, Grey Ghosts (1998), was based on her PhD thesis on New
Zealand Vietnam veterans. Who'll Stop the Rain?, about the effects of Agent Orange on some of those veterans, followed
in 2000 by a short regional history, Pictures from the Past: Waikato. Deborah is also the author of five novels and has
written for the Waikato Times as a columnist and a feature writer.
Documenting World War Two Dissent
Russell Campbell
Wednesday 3 May, 7.30 - 9.00pm
New Zealand's involvement in World War Two had the support of the majority of the population however there were those
who were passionately opposed to participation - principally pacifists and (until June 1941) Communists. They spoke out
against the war, published dissentient opinion, and refused to enlist. The government reacted by enacting a series of
stringent emergency measures designed to prevent the dissemination of anti-war and anti-conscription views, and set up
detention camps for military defaulters not deemed to be genuine conscientious objectors. In this session Russell
Campbell will discuss the process of recording and investigating this aspect of our history in his feature documentary
Sedition: The Suppression of Dissent in World War II New Zealand.
BIO
Russell Campbell is Senior Lecturer in Film at Victoria University of Wellington. He has published widely on aspects of
the cinema, particularly documentary film, and is a partner in Vanguard Films and the Community Media Trust. His earlier
films with Vanguard include Rebels in Retrospect, Islands of the Empire (recipient of the Media Peace Award), Wildcat
and A Century of Struggle.
'Dear Folks': An Emotional History of World War Two
Deborah Montgomerie
Wednesday 10 May, 7.30 - 9.00pm
When soldiers went to war they left parents, wives, sweethearts and children behind, often for years at a time. What
were the challenges created by these separations and how were they met? Using letters and diaries we can appreciate the
images of family, home and sacrifice that kept soldiers and their loved ones going through difficult times. We can also
begin to trace a history of wartime emotions such as love, anxiety, boredom, and hope for a better future, which are as
much part of our war history as troop deployments or battle stories.
BIO
Deborah Montgomerie is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at The University of Auckland. A specialist in the
social and cultural history of twentieth century New Zealand she has written extensively about the history of the Second
World War. Her books The Women's War: New Zealand Women, 1939-45, 2001, and Love in Time of War: Letter Writing in the
Second World War, 2005, are published by Auckland University Press.
SYMPOSIUM: The New Zealand Veteran Experience
Wednesday 17 May, 7.30 - 9.00pm
Those who serve their country in times of war and subsequently return are called veterans. What is the shared experience
of these people? What does a country do to support them on their return; indeed what should a country do? What have
these veterans commonly done to support one another? These questions will be explored by a panel involving veterans, and
people from Government bodies and community social services.

ANZAC Day

Every year, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland City Council and the RSA marks ANZAC Day with a series of services
and commemorative events. the Museum opens to the public immediately after the dawn service. No donation will be asked
for on this day.
Public Programme for Anzac Day
In association with the Auckland City Council and the RSA, the Museum marks ANZAC Day with a series of services and
commemorative events throughout the day.
School Holiday Programme
There's a great range of activities and workshops being planned at Auckland Museum to keep children and families busy
these April school holidays. The theme is based around ANZAC and a number of special events are planned.
Lest We Forget Poetry Competition
Monday 24 April, 10.30am
World War II Hall Of Memories, Second Floor
Write your own personal response to war. The subject could be wars past or present, your imagination is the only
restriction. Send your poem in to Lest We Forget Poetry Competition, Auckland Museum, Freepost 65043, Private Bag 92018,
Auckland, to arrive no later than Friday 21 April. Finalists will be invited to read their poem in a special poetry
morning on Monday 24 April. Two winners will be asked to present their poems in the Museum on Anzac Day.
Lottie - A Nurse's Story

Scars On the Heart I, Second Floor
Charlotte le Gallais trained as a nurse at Auckland Hospital and served on the hospital ship Maheno in 1915. Join Lottie
in this interactive performance to find out about life on board the ship and what it was like to have two brothers who
were serving in the army.

Come on a family friendly tour of Scars on the Heart, our World War I galleries, and find out amazing facts and figures

Collect a form from us to help you retrieve your relatives' war records, so you can have them added permanently to the
Museum's database.
Volcano Art Competition
Closing Date: Sunday 30 April
Volcanoes can be spectacular and special places. Use your imagination, or come in and check out our new Volcano Gallery
for some inspiration, then create a volcano artwork for this fun competition. Create your own volcano in this fun
competition. Entries must be on A4 paper or a 3D sculpture no bigger than 40cm long. Winners will receive a cool volcano
pack from the Museum Shop and have their entry on display in Treasures & Tales. Pick up an entry form from the Information Desk or from Stevenson Discovery Centre.
Dinosaurs Alive!

The Museum's dryosaurs will make four daily appearances during the school holidays at 11.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm and 3pm
daily.
