Maori Television Unveils Anzac Day Schedule
Maori Television is unveiling its all-day schedule of programming for New Zealand’s national day of commemoration, ANZAC
Day, on Tuesday April 25.
The unprecedented coverage – presented by senior Maori Television journalist Wena Harawira and co-hosted by former One
News presenter Judy Bailey – begins at 6.00 AM live from Auckland War Memorial Museum’s dawn service before crossing to
Gisborne’s dawn ceremony at 7.00 AM.
Special segments screening throughout the day include the 28th Maori Battalion (7.30 AM); World War 1 – The Legacy (9.30
AM); Women in War (1.30 PM); Koro’s Medals (2.00 PM); Vietnam Remembered (5.30 PM); and Beating The Retreat (6.00 PM).
Live coverage from the dawn service at Gallipoli in Turkey will screen at 3.00 PM while highlights of ANZAC Day
observances around the country go to air at 10.00 AM and again at 11.00 PM.
Viewers return to Maori Television’s Auckland studio at 6.30 PM for a live studio debate and again at 8.30 PM for live
interviews, entertainment and letters.
As well as being the Year of the Veteran, 2006 is also the 90th anniversary of the organisation founded by those who did
return from Gallipoli – the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association.
The schedule for Tuesday April 25 is:
6.00 AM – Dawn Service, Cenotaph, Auckland War Memorial Museum: Live coverage of the dawn service as returned service
personnel march to the war memorial where they are joined by members of the armed forces and the public.
7.00 AM – Dawn Service, Gisborne: Live coverage from the first city in the world to see the sun each day.
7.30 AM – 28th Maori Battalion: The legendary exploits of this famous fighting unit.
9.30 AM – World War 1 – The Legacy: New Zealand – with a military-age male population of barely 250,000 – sent more than
100,000 soldiers overseas in World War 1; 18,000 of these men never returned home and another 41,000 were wounded.
10.00 AM – ANZAC Day Around New Zealand: A regional round-up of ANZAC Day observances from locations around the country.
11.00 AM – Citizens’ Service, Cenotaph, Auckland War Memorial Museum: Live coverage from the citizens’ service featuring
the parade of service personnel wearing their medals and displaying military banners and standards.
12.00 PM – War Stories Our Mothers Never Told Us: Documentary directed by Gaylene Preston. Seven elderly women offer
candid yet articulate and frank recollections of their wartime experiences.
1.30 PM – Women In War: Studio discussion about the personal experiences of the women who went to war and those who
stayed at home.
2.00 PM – Koro’s Medals: Where do they come from and what do they mean? The stories behind your keepsakes.
3.00 PM – Dawn Service, Gallipoli, Turkey: Live from ANZAC Cove. On April 25 1915, ANZAC soldiers landed on the shores
of the Gallipoli peninsula.
3.30 PM – New Zealand at War: Stories to make you laugh and to make you cry.
5.30 PM – Vietnam Remembered: New Zealand’s longest and most controversial military engagement of the last century.
6.00 PM – Beating the Retreat: The lowering of the flag – a century-old military tradition to mark the going down of the
sun.
6.30 PM – Na Ratou, Mo Tatou – They Did It For Us: Live debate from Maori Television’s Auckland studio.
7.00 PM – Ask Your Auntie: An ANZAC special. Panel show fronted by Ella Henry where a group of Maori women answer life’s
problems sent in by Maori Television viewers. Just ‘Ask Your Auntie’!
7.30 PM – Te Kaea: Maori Television’s news programme.

8.00 PM – B & B: New Zealand’s funniest comedy is back with an ANZAC special.
8.30 PM – Na Ratou, Mo Tatou – They Did It For Us: A celebration from Maori Television’s Auckland studio including
letters, songs and interviews.
10.30 PM – Te Kaea: Repeat of Maori Television’s news programme at 7.30 PM.
