The body in focus
The human body comes under close inspection in Wetware, a group exhibition at Artstation from 27 April until 11 May
2006.
Wetware: a mutable water, the body, a container for ancient oceans looks at ways of viewing the human body from behind
the camera lens. The exhibition draws on this notion to investigate perceptions of the human body in contemporary art
and society.
Six established and emerging artists use lens-based media including photography, photo- montage and video to open up
discussion on the human form.
The idea for the Wetware exhibition came about when renowned figurative painter Jan Nigro started working with
photomontage.
“After a long career as a painter of the human condition, recently I felt a yearn to go ‘out of context’ which to me
meant looking at current photographic art. I discovered a strong conceptual and sometimes complicit gaze at the body,”
says Ms Nigro.
The artists in Wetware draw on a long history of the figurative tradition in art, yet also look at the diverse
perspectives of the body in today’s society including ideas ranging from cyborgation (the process of becoming a cyborg)
to make-over’s.

Artstation, Auckland City’s community visual arts facility, is located at the old police barracks at 1 Ponsonby Rd,
Newton. It is easy to get to by public transport with the Link’s ‘Artstation’ bus stop right outside.
