Berlin Screening For New Zealand Documentary
LOVE, SPEED & LOSS, the documentary that tells the story of New Zealand motorcycle designer and grand prix racer Kim Newcombe, is
scheduled for a German premiere screening at a cinema in Berlin on June 18th.
Among the invited audience at the premiere screening at the Filmkunst66 cinema will be German friends and colleagues of
Kim and Janeen Newcombe who took part in the film. The Newcombe’s sons Mark and Kim Newcombe Junior will travel from New
Zealand to attend.
The New Zealand couple made Berlin their home from 1969 to 1973, when Kim worked as an engineer at the Konig marine
engine factory run by Dieter Konig. It was there that Newcombe built his grand prix motorcycle with a Konig engine that
he took to second place in the 1973 World 500cc Championship.
A rare BMW / Konig motorcycle prototype will be displayed in the cinema foyer for the premiere and is believed to be the
first public appearance of the machine that was at the centre of a secret collaboration between Konig and BMW in the
1970’s to develop a two-stroke powered street motorcycle.
The documentary’s producer, Richard Driver, said “It is important that we have this screening in Berlin, as the city is
the setting for the story of Kim Newcombe and the Konig motorcycle he built in the 1970’s, and his achievements are as
much a celebration for the people of his adopted home of Berlin and Germany, as they are for New Zealanders.”
The Berlin screening follows in the wake of a theatrical release through Rialto Cinemas in New Zealand and screenings at
the Melbourne Real Life on Documentary Festival and the 2005 Telecom NZ International Festival.
TV3 New Zealand is scheduled to broadcast LOVE, SPEED & LOSS at a date later this year.
