TSOTSI Named Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Annual Academy Awards®
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Amidst a highly contested field, powerhouse South African drama TSOTSI walked away with the Oscar® for Best Foreign
Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards on Sunday night. Accepting the award at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, TSOTSI
Director Gavin Hood was emotional and triumphant, thanking the film’s breakout stars, Presley Chweneyagae and Terry
Pheto, and recognizing the accomplishments of his fellow nominees: “We may have foreign language films, but our stories
are the same as your stories. They're about the human heart and emotion.”
Released by Rialto Distribution throughout New Zealand on 1 June, TSOTSI will premiere in Auckland, Wellington,
Christchurch, and Dunedin as the Opening film for the 8th annual World Cinema Showcase, presented by the New Zealand
Film Festival Trust.
“The Oscar win is only the latest victory for a brilliant film that continues to move from strength to strength,” noted
Rialto CEO Kelly Rogers. “Having already won top honours in Edinburgh, Toronto, Thessaloniki, Los Angeles AFI and Pan
African, and Santa Barbara, TSOTSI has conquered the international festival circuit since premiering less than a year
ago. This is why I’m especially pleased to launch this film in conjunction with the World Cinema Showcase, as it proves
once again how deeply committed the New Zealand Film Festival organisation is to bringing the best of world cinema to
New Zealand audiences first.”
