Discover the CBD's Living Room
Watch out for some weird and wonderful "happenings" in the CBD from March to May as part of Auckland City's 2006 Living
Room series to enliven the central city.
The initial happening, Castles in the Sand, will see Britomart's Takutai Square transformed from Thursday 9 March into a
giant sandpit complete with oversized props including a two-metre high bucket and a sandcastle large enough to be walked
through by small children.
From 20 March, Aucklanders will find proverbs popping up underfoot across the CBD as part of the Proverbial Auckland
installation, which builds on the success of last year's Poetry on the Pavement. The proverbs will be on pavements until
17 May.
Office workers in the CBD could be in for a pleasant surprise on the mornings of 9 March, 30 March, 20 April and 11 May
with Morning Tea. Waiters will be setting up tables along Queen Street and K Road to offer a free morning tea, so those
in the area are advised to keep their eyes peeled.
Commuters should look out for a 'trio of trios' looking to transform their bus ride into a travelling musical carnival
from 15 March as part of Musical Bus Stops. This interactive happening will transform bus stops into stages, and
commuters into participants in the spectacle.
Auckland's forgotten history will be brought to life in April with Skeletons in the Closet. This unique installation
will be found along Queen Street and K Road, and offers a trip down memory lane.
Visitors to Britomart's QE II Square during April will be 'a-mazed' by the giant maze in front of them as part of Pallet
Maze. The maze will be built from wooden pallets stacked to form a miniature house.
Britomart will also host Multicultimedia, a multimedia installation showing Auckland's unique identity which will run
from 10 April until 23 April.
Aotea Square will be transformed into a living room from 18 April with Axminster, an intriguing installation which will
consist of configurations of house carpet laid in the centre of Aotea Square.
Finally, Living Room will be lighting up the lives of those in the CBD with Living Lamps, an eclectic selection of
interior lampshades that will have passers-by turning around for a second look.
Living Room is funded by the CBD targeted rate, and seeks to enliven the CBD's public spaces. The Living Room series is
a key action from Auckland's CBD Into the future strategy, which aims to transform Auckland's CBD into one of the
world's most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres.
