Music Show Blasts Back on Maori Television
Urban music series COAST blasts back for a third sizzling season on Maori Television – same night, different timeslot
(Thursday March 16 at 9.30 PM).
Presenters Brent Mio and Kara Rickard return to the COAST couch for the weekly one-hour broadcast which will feature
studio performances, field reports, interviews and artist profiles.
COAST producer Summer Wharekawa says viewers are again invited to the state-of-the-art Auckland studio of Maori
Television to take part in the filming of the show as the studio audience – this time from 9.00 PM on Wednesday nights.
“We’re offering the public a chance to come down and take part in the taping of the show, to check out the live music
and then be able to watch themselves on television the next night,” Wharekawa says. “Other than that, the format remains
similar to last year – performances from some of the best bands in Aotearoa, the latest video clips, exclusive
giveaways, fun field stories and new music.”
Brent Mio is a seasoned music host after fronting the first and second series of COAST as well as holding court on the
breakfast show at top-rating Auckland radio station Mai FM 88.6. The Te Teko old boy’s musical influences extend from
the Motown classics through to Bob Marley and the Wailers and beyond to modern hip hop soldiers like Busta Rhymes, 50
Cent and Eminem.
Raised in Raglan, Kara Rickard completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences at Waikato University before taking up a position
doubling as production co-ordinator and te reo Maori consultant for Auckland television production company Butobase.
Rickard was lured from the beach to the big smoke of Auckland in 2004 and was destined to emerge from behind the scenes.
Though she had no previous experience in front of the camera, her bubbly personality, good looks and love for New
Zealand music ensured she was a natural for the role on COAST last year.
Rickard says she couldn’t have found a job to suit her better. “Presenting COAST is perfect for me because I’ve always
loved live music and now I get to watch it, talk about it and meet the people who make it for a living! It also gives me
the chance to use te reo Maori in a contemporary context which is fun and engaging for rangatahi. I think it’s important
to expose people to Maori in as many settings as possible.”
